Golf: Oosthuizen caught at the top

South African golfer Tjaart van der Walt has yet to win a tournament since turning professional in 1996.

(CNN) -- Tjaart van der Walt will seek to upstage two of his most illustrious golfing compatriots and win his first professional tournament at the Africa Open on Sunday.

The 37-year-old goes into the final round tied for the lead with 2010 British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and one shot ahead of two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen after carding a superb eight-under-par 65 in East London on Saturday.

Van der Walt, who finished second in a 2005 U.S. PGA Tour event, eliminated Oosthuizen's two-shot overnight lead as he started with four successive birdies and -- like his fellow South African -- picked up a shot at the final hole.

The world No. 347's only blemish at his home event came at the par-four eighth hole, and he was confident he could contend for his first title since turning pro in 1996 in the opening event of the 2012 European Tour season.

"At the end of the day, the golf ball doesn't know that they are major champions," he said of his rivals. "I've played at the highest level, I've never won majors or big events, so who knows what can happen.

"I do feel as if I am controlling the golf ball as well as I have in a long time. Not just tee to green, but on the greens as well. And that's a good sign for me. I'm entitled to forget the one bad shot I hit all day."

Defending champion Oosthuizen's only lapse came at the par-five 11th hole as he took four shots to reach the green.

"It was an elementary mistake really. Those little chip-outs seem easy, and I made the basic error of leaving it short of a tree for my approach to the green," the world No. 40 said.

Goosen, seeking his first European Tour win for five years, carded a flawless 66 to be on 20-under 199.

The 42-year-old, who topped the tour's Order of Merit money list in 2001 and 2002, was one shot clear of fourth-placed Englishman Danny Willett, who shot 65.

Another South African, Richard Sterne, was also in contention after firing seven birdies and an eagle in his 64 to claim fifth place on 202.

The 30-year-old, a five-time winner on the tour, is making his first outing in almost a year following back problems.

Meanwhile, defending champion Jonathan Byrd claimed a one-shot lead after Friday's first round of the PGA Tour's season-opening Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The 33-year-old, whose only title last year came in Kapalua, carded six-under 67 on the Plantation Course to lead the 28-man field.

Fellow American Webb Simpson, who was runner-up in the 2011 FedEx Cup series and the tour's money list, was equal second with compatriots Steve Stricker and Michael Bradley plus Scotland's Martin Laird.

PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley was sixth after a 69, while veteran Korean K.J. Choi carded 70.

Lucas Glover, who beat Byrd in a playoff at the Wells Fargo Championship last season, withdrew before his tee-off due to a knee injury suffered while paddleboarding last weekend.

Sheen donates $25,000 to Alabama tornado relief

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Actor Charlie Sheen quietly donated $25,000 to help tornado relief in Alabama, making good on a pledge to help survivors of the deadly twisters even though some had doubted his promises.

The head of Tuscaloosa's tourism agency, Don Staley, said a representative of Sheen recently turned over money that came in through a fundraising website that the actor set up after tornadoes last spring killed about 250 people in Alabama, including 52 in the west Alabama city.

Sheen wrote a check for about $15,000 after the website generated just $10,000 in contributions.

"He said he wanted to raise $25,000, and he made good on that," said Bob Maron, one of Sheen's managers.

Sheen visited Tuscaloosa after the April 27 twisters in response to messages from then-University of Alabama student David Harris, who had sent tweets to celebrities asking them to help out. Sheen - who had been fired the previous month from the hit sitcom "Two and a Half Men" - talked about staging a relief show and celebrity ball game to raise $25,000.

Months passed and many of Sheen's plans didn't materialize, leading some to wonder whether he'd forgotten about the town of more than 80,000. But the actor donated the money without any public announcement around Dec. 1, said Donny Jones of the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, which is helping manage the Tuscaloosa Disaster Relief Fund, which received the donation.

Staley, who accompanied Sheen during his daylong visit to Alabama, said the actor just wanted to help.

"The man delivered," Staley said Wednesday. "He's a man of his word."

Tornadoes that ravaged the South last April badly damaged or destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in Alabama.

After touring the destruction and visiting with survivors and relief workers, Sheen posted a photo and message on Twitter that called the scene "beyond words."

Sheen sent autographed photos and baseballs to Tuscaloosa along with DVD box sets of "Two and a Half Men" after his visit.

A website set up by Sheen to accept donations for Tuscaloosa through Paypal is no longer taking money, and Harris said he had assumed Sheen wouldn't follow through after losing touch.

"I tried to contact him and never heard back, so I just thought nothing would happen," Harris said. "I'm glad he helped out."

Maron said the actor's plans for a concert didn't pan out when performers backed out after a tornado decimated Joplin, Mo., just weeks after the Alabama outbreak.

"They said, `Hey, we can't just single them out for attention, and Charlie felt the same way," Maron said Thursday.

Every new year is filled with financial strategists, pundits and gurus weighing in with their predictions and forecasts for the financial markets.? You can see this year?s many examples over at Pragmatic Capitalism. The problem is not in the forecasts themselves which will if history is any guide turn out to be a mixed bag by year end.? The problem is when investors take these forecasts seriously and adjust their financial plans accordingly.? This is by all accounts confuses what is an exercise in publicity with actual investing.

We get into trouble when we confuse investing with enter?tainment.

A decade or so ago, investing had become America?s fa?vorite spectator sport. Everywhere you went people were talking about finding the next hot stock, mutual fund, or alternative investment. Magazines with covers like ?Ten Hot Funds to Buy Now? and ?Five Stocks That Sizzle? made in?vesting sound fun. You couldn?t turn on the television with?out seeing some lout screaming ?Buy! Buy! Buy!?

Most of the stock market coverage in the media was de?signed to appeal to our fantasies about getting rich quickly?our wildest financial hopes and dreams. And most of us were eager to swallow the story that we could get rich quickly in stocks. So, despite knowing at some level that market timing, stock picking, and day-trading are hazardous to our wealth, many people still did those things.

Every one of those investors would have benefited from asking these questions: Am I investing to meet my most im?portant financial goals, or am I investing as a form of enter?tainment? Am I being realistic, or am I letting my fantasies run away with me?

Sure, investing is fun while you?re making money. And it?s fun to indulge in occasional daydreams about getting rich the easy way. But this is not Monopoly. This is real life. We?re dealing with real money and real goals. When we for?get that?when we confuse investing and entertainment?we almost always end up behaving badly.

College Sports: The 2012 Big Game: It’s on Oct. 20 (yes: October 20th)

2:20 p.m. update: The schools aren?t happy about the date and made that fairly clear in their remarks.

Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour said she was ?very disappointed? in the decision but added: ?Although Cal and Stanford were opposed to the schedule that was ultimately adopted because of the placement of the Big Game, we remain a full participant in the conference?s decision-making and governance process.?

Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby said the Oct. 20 date ?is certainly not our first choice but the conference is governed by the will of the majority.?

There were three scheduling models on the table. One had Big Game slotted for Nov. 17, one had it on Thanksgiving weekend, and one placed it on Oct. 20.

Both Cal and Stanford were opposed to playing Thanksgiving weekend, according to Bowlsby, because of the holiday conflicting with events associated with Big Game.

The schools supported the schedule model that had Big Game on Nov. 17, but they were out-voted ? that model was apparently disruptive to too many other games. The majority ruled, and Big Game got moved to October.

According to Cal, the 2012 situation won?t be the norm.

3:45 p.m. update: Statement from Pac-12 commish Larry Scott:

The Pac-12 Conference values the importance of our historic rivalry games and the importance of scheduling them in traditional end-of-season dates. However, with the addition of our Championship Football Game the last week of the season, and new television agreements commencing in 2012, there will be additional priorities that need to be balanced when making the schedule that will mean occasional date adjustments to rivalry games. In this case,?we made every effort to create a schedule that would allow the Big Game to be played at the end of the season.?Cal and Stanford were clear that they did not want to play the Big Game Thanksgiving week so?we presented additional options to our member institutions for discussion and a vote. Ultimately the majority vote determined the schedule ?

The Pac-12 just announced its 2012 football schedule, and I?ll have a full update later. But here?s the news in the Bay Area:

Big Game is in October.

I alluded to this possibility a few months ago on the Hotline, and now it?s official:?Cal and Stanford will play (in Berkeley) Oct. 20.

That?s right, a rivalry game prior to November 1st.

If you think it sounds strange now, just wait until game week. It?s going to be as weird as weird gets.

It?s the result of a confluence of factors, including the Pac-12 title game and a slew of Thursday night games, that have limited the league?s flexibility.

It?s the only rivalry game that will be played in October ? next season. In future years, other games may need to be moved up from the traditional November windows.

Stanford will finish its season Nov. 24 at UCLA

Cal will finish Nov. 17 at Oregon State.

Box Office Preview: 'M:I 4' continues global climb (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Paramount's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" will maintain its firm grip on the domestic box office with a leading 17 million-plus in Tom Cruise-powered dollars expected for its fourth weekend. By Sunday night, the film should be well on its way toward $400 million worldwide.

The R-rated "The Devil Inside" from Paramount Insurge will be the only wide-release newcomer this weekend and should scare its way to near the top of the chart with a debut in the $12 million to $15 million range. teens.? Capitalizing on the success of its "Paranormal Activity" franchise, Paramount hopes for another hit with this mock-reality horror entry.

Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" will also enter its fourth weekend with solid momentum as it closes in on the $250 million mark at the global box office.? A consistent hold on the No. 2 spot in the midweek race should place it in the third position for the weekend with a domestic gross in the low teens.

Fox's PG-rated "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" continues to be the "go to" movie for the family audience, crossing the $100 million mark domestically on Wednesday. An expected weekend gross in the $10 million range will put the little critters in the top five once again.

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" from Sony has shown itself to be a steady performer after a modest start over Christmas weekend as it continues to build an audience.? Having earned over $60 million thus far in North America, the R-rated thriller heads into its third weekend with solid word-of-mouth and a likely take of just under $10 million.
