Agnico-Eagle Moves Forward with La India Mine Development, Expects Commercial Production by 2014

Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. (NYSE:AEM,TSX:AEM) announced that the development and construction of its Mexico-based La India mine have been approved by its board of directors and commented that the mine will be an open-pit, heap leach operation. Commercial production is expected in the second half of 2014.

As quoted in the press release:

Construction costs for the project are expected to total approximately?$158 million, which will be funded from the Company?s operating cash flows.? Sustaining capital costs are forecast to total approximately?$25 million?over the eight year life of the mine.? New capital of? approximately?$40 million?is expected to be added to the Company?s total in 2012.

The feasibility study estimates that the La India project will generate an internal rate of return of approximately 31% assuming a gold price of?$1,379?per ounce. Metallurgical recoveries are estimated to average approximately 80%, resulting in average gold production of 90,000 ounces per year.? The waste to ore stripping ratio in the open pit mine is estimated at approximately 1:1. Life of mine total cash costs at La?India?are expected to average?$500?per ounce.

Commission and Berlin differ over ECB bank supervision

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Germany and the European Commission appeared at odds on Monday over the extent of oversight the European Central Bank should be given as part of efforts to create a European banking union and quell the region's debt crisis.

Olli Rehn, the European commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, said the ECB should be allowed to supervise all euro zone banks as well as those in non-euro zone countries that choose to become part of a single supervisory mechanism.

Such broad oversight would be the first step towards creating a banking union and allowing the euro zone to directly recapitalize banks to break the vicious circle between indebted governments and their troubled banking sectors.

But German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has rejected such an approach, saying the ECB should instead focus on monitoring only the largest, systemically important banks, a move that would leave most German banks outside the net.

"Our approach ... envisages an ambitious mechanism with a relatively broad coverage, which will oversee all banks in the euro area, with the ECB at the heart of the system," Rehn said in a speech to a European Parliament committee on Monday.

The European Commission will set out formal proposals for banking union on September 12, when Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso makes his annual state of the union address. The drafting of the proposals has led to a battle of wills between national capitals and policymakers in Brussels.

If the ECB were to oversee all euro zone banks, it would give it responsibility for several thousand institutions, even if 95 percent of euro zone banking assets are held by only around 200 banks.

Schaeuble has said he believes a narrow field of responsibility will give the ECB more opportunity to focus its efforts and get to grips with breaking the banking-sovereign links, succeeding where previous authorities have failed.

"The ECB has itself said it does not have the potential to supervise the European Union's 6,000 banks in the foreseeable future," Schaeuble told German radio on Monday, saying a distinction should be drawn between small banks and major ones.

"With the bigger, systemically relevant banks ... there is a chance that direct supervision by the ECB could be realized in a foreseeable period of time," he said.

Schaeuble has not made clear which institutions he would consider to be 'systemically relevant'. The 200 would include the larger German state-owned Landesbanks and Spanish 'cajas' where many of the European banking sector's problems began.

Berlin is keen to keep its state-owned Landesbanks, with their close relationships with politicians and businesses, out of the supervisory reaches of the ECB.

But Rehn stressed the sweeping powers for the ECB were needed because even relatively small banks could cause trouble.

"Even small banks can be systemic and cause financial turmoil," he said mentioning Britain's Northern Rock, Ireland's Anglo Irish and Spain's Bankia, which had to be nationalized to save them from failure.

After the Commission presents its banking union proposals, EU leaders will try to forge agreement before the end of the year on how to move forward. The aim is for the bones of a banking union to be in place early in 2013.

To complete the banking union, however, the euro zone will have to agree on a way to guarantee bank deposits in the single currency area and decide who will pay for the resolution of failed banks supervised by the ECB, a process that could take many months or years to complete.

Kent + Liz: summer blogging vacae

I have been on vacation from blogging, so this is my attempt to recap the happenings of the last few months.

Our summer has been full of family, food (of course), and fun, but the favorite event has been anything and everything having to do with this baby girl. At 21.5 weeks we saw her kick for the first time! I almost couldn't believe my eyes... but she has since made a hobby of kicking and nudging around in there, and I love it. I love knowing when she is awake. She usually moves during/after meals, late at night, and early in the morning. According to the doctor (as of two weeks ago) she is head down with her little bum under my right ribs. I can feel her push her bum out ALL the time, and I even appear rather lopsided due to her positioning. I passed my glucose test but was told I am slightly anemic, so have been taking an iron supplement. Besides lower back pain and the discomfort that you would expect from hauling a bowling ball around with you everywhere you go, I feel great! I am feeling the way I imagined being 9 months pregnant would feel (LARGE)... so it should be interesting how these next 8 weeks go. We are currently in our 32nd week.

We had my sister and her cute family in town from Arizona the first week in July and were lucky enough to have them stay with us! We LOVED having them in town and only wish we had family around on a more permanent basis. We joined them in hiking to Timpanogos Caves.

For the 4th of July we joined Kent's family in Idaho for fireworks and festivities!?

The day after returning from Idaho I headed to Arizona for my family baby shower. No Arizona trip is complete without good food and gaming it up with mom!

My mom, sisters, and sister in law are all SO talented and threw me the most amazing baby shower.

Kent and I call this little babe "our little ray of sunshine" so they used the theme "You are my Sunshine" and decorated accordingly! So sweet.

I felt so loved, and am overwhelmed with gratitude for all of the love and support we have received from family and friends throughout this pregnancy.

The girls in my family take every opportunity we can to get together (and eat).

This little nugget is the newest member of the Massey clan. He is about the happiest sweetest thing you've ever met. While in AZ we conducted a non-photographer photo sesh, by yours truly.

Another excuse to eat... sibling bonding time.

We raced back from AZ to fit in a date with these two! Some of our besties that live in Texas now but were in Utah the whole time we were out of town in Arizona. We had one night with them, which is never enough!

26 weeks

A week after returning from AZ some of my siblings decided to come for a visit! We ate and played... what else is there to do?!

My brother RJ attended BYU during the summer, so my other brother, Lance, and sister, Lacey, decided to drive up from Arizona to visit him (and me, of course). RJ has since moved home and recently?received his mission call to the Columbia Bogota South Mission! We are so excited for him.

Summer lunch dates with friends.

Museum trips.

More hikes.

More family... Amber, Kent's younger sister, stayed with us for a week. Besides forcing her to watch almost 24 hours a day of Olympic coverage, we hiked to Stewart Falls, took her to a few local restaurants, and hit up the mall for some back to school shopping.?

Growing belly.

Nursery prep.

Farmer's market.

And a lot of lovin' on this bump....

....by all members of the family.

It has been a beautiful summer, and I have yet to have any legitimate pregnancy cravings... but I will say I have seriously been craving this upcoming Fall season. The colors, smells, foods, changing leaves, weather, anything and everything autumn. I welcome the cooler weather and color orange with open arms. Bring on the pumpkins!

Pickup trucks drive US auto sales to 3-year high

DETROIT (AP) ? After years of sputtering, sales of big pickups kicked into overdrive last month.

Demand for full-size pickups jumped 16 percent, helping make August the strongest month for U.S. auto sales in three years. Overall auto sales increased 20 percent from a year earlier to nearly 1.3 million, according to Autodata corp.

The rising demand shows that businesses need to replace aging trucks and feel more confident about the recovery in U.S. housing ? a market where pickups are essential for hauling equipment and crews.

"Businesses don't usually go buy a fleet of trucks unless they have good reason to believe that business will be ramping up," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of market intelligence for the TrueCar.com auto pricing service

Ford, GM and Chrysler, the biggest makers of full-size trucks, notched double-digit gains in overall sales last month.

In pickups, Ford's F-Series, the top-selling vehicle in America, saw a 19 percent sales increase, as did Chrysler's Ram pickup. Sales of General Motors' Chevy Silverado rose 4 percent, while the GMC Sierra was up 9 percent. Toyota's struggling big truck, the Tundra, posted a huge increase of 68 percent.

The rising demand helped push total U.S. auto sales last month to an annual rate of 14.5 million. That's the best monthly sales pace since the government's "Cash for Clunkers" rebate program in August of 2009.

Pent-up demand is part of the reason for the truck increase. The average vehicle on U.S. roads is nearing 11 years old, and some are simply wearing out.

But automakers and industry analysts say the economic recovery ? new housing in particular ? is starting to make buyers feel more comfortable about a big-ticket purchase.

There's a direct correlation between the housing market and pickup sales, they say. When people who work in housing or other construction are more confident, they tend to invest in equipment. Some may be adding crews and need vehicles to get them to and from job sites.

Housing has been in the dumps since the 2008 financial meltdown. But recently there have been some good signs. U.S. new home sales rose 3.6 percent in July to match a two-year high reached in May. In the past 12 months, sales have jumped 25 percent. But new-home sales remain well below the annual pace that economists consider healthy.

Gas mileage also is playing a role in the pickup increase. Newer models are lighter than older ones and can be equipped with small but powerful V-6 engines. A business owner can cut costs dramatically by replacing a 10-year-old pickup, said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting for LMC Automotive, an industry consulting firm.

A new Ford F-150 with a six-cylinder engine can get up to 23 miles per gallon on the highway. A V-8-powered F-150 got only 18 mpg on the highway in 2002.

Normally, strong truck sales don't happen until the last three months of the year due to marketing promotions and customers wanting four-wheel-drive vehicles as winter approaches, Schuster said. So the August surge bodes well for the industry.

Toprak expects truck sales to grow faster than the rest of the U.S. car market for the remainder of the year.

Truck sales also are good for automakers' profits, especially the Detroit Three. The companies make $5,000 or more on pickup sales, compared with $1,000 to $2,000 for an average car, Schuster said.

The strong sales in August can't be attributed to deals. Discounts on the F-150 and Ram pickups fell compared with last year, while they rose only 5 percent on Chevy's Silverado, to $4,787. The F-150 incentives are the lowest since 2007, when Ford offered an average of $3,598 per truck, according to the Edmunds.com website.

In overall sales, Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen led the way with big increases. Toyota sales were up 46 percent, while Honda sales rose 60 percent. VW kept its stunning growth going with an increase of 63 percent. Both Honda and Toyota reported big increases because last year's numbers were depressed when an earthquake in Japan hobbled their factories and caused shortages of cars and trucks.

Gas prices, which rose more than 20 cents a gallon during the month to an average of $3.82, drove people into smaller cars. The Chevrolet Cruze once again became the top-selling compact in America with almost 26,000 in sales. Sales of Toyota's Corolla, and Ford's Focus were up double digits, and Honda Civic sales more than doubled.

Buyers also were drawn out by exciting new models such as the midsize Nissan Altima and the Dodge Dart subcompact, Schuster said.
