Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act Saved In Fiscal Cliff Deal ...

Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act Saved In Fiscal Cliff Deal

Best I can tell the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act, which prevents underwater homeowners from having to pay income tax on the phantom income generated when their mortgage lender forgives a portion of their mortgage, was extended as part of the fiscal cliff deal that was approved by the house of representatives last night. Originally, it was set to expire on December 31, 2012 but the version of the fiscal cliff deal passed by the Senate extended the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act, as reported by the National Association of Realtors yesterday.

The House of Representatives essentially approved this deal last night but the reason I'm hedging here is because I can't be sure that I have found the final version of the bill and I'm not very familiar with the legislative process or the making of sausage. Does this have to go back to the Senate because changes were made? However, numerous sources are reporting today that this tax break has been preserved and I found this section in the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 on the House of Representatives site which pertains to this issue. If this is a done deal I know a lot of underwater homeowners are breathing a sigh of relief today.

What I used in 2012: Richard Devine

Android Central

And so, with 2012 now behind us, the traditional reflection on the year past begins. Being British, last year was pretty memorable -- the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Summer Olympics in London two standout moments. We've also seen the mobile world continue to grow at an incredible rate, as our smartphones and tablets become an increasingly integral part of every day life.

AC's editor-in-chief, Phil Nickinson, couldn't have put it better -- "In this job, you can't help but be buried in plastic from time to time." It's true of each member of the team. We talk about devices and apps all day every day, but we don't really talk about what we're using in our own, every day lives. It's been a heck of a year in these parts, so click on past the break to find out what I've been using the most during 2012.

Intelligence agencies faulted on Libya fallout

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Senate report has found that the White House did not make major changes in the talking points administration officials used after the deadly attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi, Libya.

Some Republicans had questioned whether the president's staff rewrote the statements for political reasons.

Instead, the report cites changes made by intelligence agencies, including the FBI and the CIA, in its probe of the origin of confusing explanations that came from the Obama administration.

The report issued Monday by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee says the White House was only responsible for a minor change.

The committee also says the director of national intelligence has been stonewalling the panel in holding back a timeline of the talking point changes.

Details of tentative deal averting 'fiscal cliff'

Highlights of a tentative agreement Monday between the White House and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., aimed at averting wide tax increases and budget cuts scheduled to take effect in the new year. The measure would raise taxes by about $600 billion over 10 years. Still unresolved is how to avert across-the-board spending cuts set to begin slashing the budgets of the Pentagon and numerous domestic agencies.

Highlights include:

?Income tax rates: Extends decade-old tax cuts on incomes up to $400,000 for individuals, $450,000 for couples. Earnings above those amounts would be taxed at a rate of 39.6 percent, up from the current 35 percent. Extends Clinton-era caps on itemized deductions and the phase-out of the personal exemption for individuals making more than $250,000 and couples earning more than $300,000.

?Estate tax: Estates would be taxed at a top rate of 40 percent, with the first $5 million in value exempted for individual estates and $10 million for family estates. In 2012, such estates were subject to a top rate of 35 percent.

?Capital gains, dividends: Taxes on capital gains and dividend income exceeding $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for families would increase from 15 percent to 20 percent.

?Alternative minimum tax: Permanently addresses the alternative minimum tax and indexes it for inflation to prevent nearly 30 million middle- and upper-middle income taxpayers from being hit with higher tax bills averaging almost $3,000. The tax was originally designed to ensure that the wealthy did not avoid owing taxes by using loopholes.

?Other tax changes: Extends for five years Obama-sought expansions of the child tax credit, earned income tax credit, and an up to $2,500 tax credit for college tuition. Also extends for one year accelerated "bonus" depreciation of business investments in new property and equipment, a tax credit for research and development costs and a tax credit for renewable energy such as wind-generated electricity.

?Unemployment benefits: Extends jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed for one year.

?Cuts in Medicare reimbursements to doctors: Blocks a 27 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors for one year. The cut is the product of an obsolete 1997 budget formula.

?Social Security payroll tax cut: Allows a 2 percentage point cut in the payroll tax first enacted two years ago to lapse, which restores the payroll tax to 6.2 percent.
