23 Year Remembrance of Tiananmen Square ? May 27th 1989, Beijing China

Written by Diane Gatterdam

Twenty-three years ago on this day Saturday May 27th 1989, a summit meeting of movement leaders and intellectuals was held outside the Square.

Chai Ling finally relented and agreed that the student?s cause would be best served by leaving the Square. It was decided that before making the strategic retreat back to their university campuses to continue a struggle in ?a new form?, protesters should hold one last face-saving rally on May 30th.

As soon as news of this agreement reached the Square, the out-of-town students were upset and said that the plan was a ?sell-out?.

They urged the protesters to remain until the Standing Committee of the National Peoples Congress met in June 20th.

Li Lu grew agitated. ?It?s too dangerous,? he yelled. ?If we leave, they?ll stop the NPC. Beijing will be under army control. We won?t be able to demonstrate. They?ll surround the colleges and block the exits. They?ll throw us in jail. You?re talking defeat. They?ve given us nothing we asked for. All our hopes will be gone!?

Li Lu turned angrily to Wang Juntao. ?What?s going on here?? he snapped. ?The Capital Joint Liaison Group has no power to make a decision like this.?

Rumors that blacklists were being prepared by the government and the threat of long prison terms made many students reluctant to give up the protection that their togetherness in the Square gave them.

Lu Li wondered, he was 23 and how many years would he spend in prison, and that student leaders like him may be sentenced to 15 to 20 years. They would be over 40 years old when they would come out.

Pressured by Li Lu and others, Chai Ling began to reconsider her position to leave the square. She broke down in tears.

Later that day, a press conference was held in the Square to announce a ten-point statement decided at the early meeting. All the students, old and new, attended, as well as the intellectual groups.

People were grabbing pens and added new wording to the ten-point statement, then someone else would cross them it out again.

By the time Wang Dan read the statement at a press conference that evening, the paper was a mass of illegible scribbles.

When Wang Dan reached the eighth point, he paused for a moment, then softly read on, ?It has been proposed to the Capital Joint Liaison Group that the students evacuate Tiananmen Square on May 30.?

He then walked away from the microphone and handed in his resignation.

Pandemonium broke out.

Another emergency conclave, another rewrite. When the students final emerged, the document had been rewritten again stating:

?Unless a special meeting of the National People?s Congress is convened in the next few days, the occupation of the square will continue until June 20.?

After the press conference Li Lu, Chai Ling, Feng Congde and Zhang Boli met and summed up the work they had done in the past few days.

Corruption had emerged among the middle level students leaders. Some were power hungry. Others were not responsible. Zhang Boli would examine the work and the people at the broadcast station and make some decisions.

They also decided to start a broadcasting ?Free Forum? two hours during which anyone could say anything.

On the night of May 27th Deng Xiaoping held a meeting at his house with the other senior leaders and determine that Jiang Zemin would be Zhao Ziyang?s successor and CCP General Secretary.

A most important item happened a few days earlier, 8 art colleges had offered to build a statue which was to be called ?The Goddess of Democracy?. The student headquarters had given them 7,000 Yuan for supplies and the artists were now working on it.

They decided to set up a Democracy University under the statue.

Though they couldn?t yet launch a frontal attack on the government, they could make Tiananmen Square the fount of democracy in China, a college to cultivate talented people and leaders, a base for a future democracy on the in the country?.

Corner Cupboard: I WANT A MEMORY HAT

?We've been enjoying a Book Festival in the town this week and as a small contribution from the theatre we staged a one man show 'The Squire of Gadshill,'? in which Charles Dickens reflects on his life and work.? This took place last Saturday evening and there I was all togged? up in Victoriana to serve behind the bar.? Lloyd Lee (who has taken this show all over Britain) looks the spitting image of Dickens and I am tempted to say sounds like him too, though I don't know if any of us know exactly what he sounded like.? But Dickens used to put on performances in which he read extracts from his novels, which Lloyd re-enacts in this show.

As Dickens he also talks about his working habits and recounts being asked in America whether the Muse was 'always upon him - or whether he had to coax it?'?? And as it happens this was a question that I discussed with the lovely Kath Eastman when I met her for lunch a couple of days later when she came over to Cowbridge.

Dickens replied that frequently he had no ideas at all about his writing and just sat at his desk making dots and doodles on the paper.? But, and I think this may be the crucial thing, he always sat there 'until his time was up.'? This, he elaborated, was from ten in the morning to two in the afternoon (or four if writer's block had given way to writer's inspiration).

In passing I find it strange that this phenomenon of 'writer's block' appears only in the literary world (or is this just my ignorance?)? Is there such a thing as 'painter's block?' or 'potter's block?' Did Mozart ever sit at a piano, his head empty of musical ideas? Composer's block? And what about the engineers among us?? Do they have bridge builder's block?

Anyway, I have decided, given the inspiration of winning the little Creative Writing Competition that was a part of the Book Festival, that I shall now consign the label business to the afternoons - and if necessary the evenings as well if we are busy - and so keep the mornings free for scribbling.? I have resurrected a piece of military history that I first wrote on a typewriter in 1983. It was never published then and no wonder as it is terribly clunkingly written.? But with the centenary of the central incident fast approaching I have decided to re-write it, hopefully in a shorter and rather more pacey style.? It seems a shame to let all that research go to waste and I always intended to return to it when I had time.? I am about two thirds of the way through and so this particular labour will not be a long one.

I shall then return to Boraya, the Chocolate Factory in St Petersburg novel that Kath keeps urging me to get on with and about which I think about regularly.? So it will be as well to get my writing habit well established: nine until one with a half hour break for a cup of tea and urgent emails.

The best plans, however.......for yesterday morning I wasn't at my scribbling desk in front of the laptop but instead was taking the laptop to an appointment with the Genius Bar at the futuristic Apple Store in Cardiff, where no-one looks real and where everyone seems to speak in a strange mid-oceanic dialect, though I have to say they are all ?ber helpful and ultra polite. ? Apple - the Company - have done something amazingly clever, but the result is that last week, not having the right up to date software apparently, I couldn't receive emails for three days (except in the most cumbersome manner) and the whole computer slowed up as though you had put a tablespoon of treacle in the works.

The man on the Genius Bar fiddled around helpfully and quickly and there I was: sorted. He didn't even try to sell me a new computer.? He suggested I might like to buy some more memory, which could be easily and cheaply done. Unfortunately, only for the computer, I, on the other hand, would have to make do with the ageing memory I already have.? Why can't you buy memory for the brain? You could wear a little memory hat with chips inside it. The brain seems to communicate with waves and just this week we saw film of a paralysed woman operating a robot with her brainwaves. So why not?? I might suggest it to Apple.

With 70 Million Registered Users, Viber Brings Beta Apps To BlackBerry, Windows Phone

viberbigWe've been covering Viber since the very beginning, through the launch of an Android app and the addition of photo/location sharing capabilities, to the moment the company announced 50 million users, 150 million calls, and a billion text messages per month. In fact, those milestones only sprung up a few weeks ago in February, and even more achievements are already being announced today. Between February and now, Viber has already jumped from 50 million users to 70 million users, who just so happen to talk for more than a billion minutes and send over a billion text messages per month. Daily, those numbers translate to over 7 million calls and 40 million texts, within which location sharing is being used about 10 percent of the time.

Sad that Samsung's rumored S-Cloud didn't appear on the scene? Well the arrival of the company's new Video, Game and Music hubs might heal the wounds.
