Know More About How Is Illustrations Done?

There is nothing more complex than humans whose dimensions, expressions, creations, ideas, thoughts, feelings, and actions, among other characteristics, are dynamic. Hence, graphic art is created and as a concept is a means of communication in itself, but sometimes necessary to complement. It serves to clarify, clarify, illustrate, decorate, enhance, among other possibilities, verbal communication.

The recipients of verbal communication and written words are primarily illustrators, artists, cartoonists who understand the world that exists beyond writing. It used to be that artists and designers used simple graphic representations, designed with vector editing software like Adobe Illustrator, to combine statistical information and typography to tell stories but more frequently, digitally illustrated graphic representations are becoming a mode of self-expression that combines quasi-factual information in just minutes to create an amusing and creative effect to any endeavor.

Some artistic undertakings clearly have moved away from data visualization and focus on creative self-expression that use the visual conventions of charts, graphs, and other representations to tell a story or illustrate a point the artist, essentially the central premise of all illustration.

Images not only have a purpose but, often shape a message. The illustration of a message is used in various ways, and has many uses, such as advertising, scientific illustration, literature, including caricatures, cartoons, among other features.

Software has an essential role in the illustrative process with a full range of practical options that can turn an idea into a full blown artistic illustration. The entire spectrum of illustration relies on some sort of software, converting data into dynamic visualizations.

With the rise of the illustrated press, particularly in industrialized countries you will find typographic illustrations and other modalities, such as pencil or pen drawings without requiring the use of computers, photolithography, and others modernisms.

Another area that lately has received a lot of attention in the illustration world is infographics. Infographics are artistic renderings of facts, such as cause and effect illustrations and directional information. These representations are also commonly used to depict interesting maps and chronological information such as trends through the years. In summary, infographics is an exciting venue to transform tedious information into an interesting story.

Pasta Fazool for Cavemen | Sticky, Gooey, Creamy, Chewy | A Blog ...

pasta-fazool-9

A lot of things have changed here at Chez SGCC now that Mr. SGCC and I are empty nesters, not the least of which is how we eat.? Our dinners have become more laid back, with a lot more salads, sandwiches and take-out taking center stage on our table.?? With Mini SGCC gone, I don?t have to worry about preparing substantial meals with enough leftovers to feed a horde of hungry teenagers.?? While this means a lot less work for me, I kind of miss it.?? I don?t know.? Cooking for just the two of us just isn?t as much fun.? I?m sure I?ll eventually get back in the groove.? Until then, I?ll be serving up more ?one pot wonders? like this Pasta Fazool for Cavemen.

If you?ve been hanging with me for a while, you may have seen my grandmother?s? Pasta e Fagioli recipe that I wrote about several years ago.?? Pasta e fagioli, aka ?pasta fazool?, which means ?pasta and beans?, is a traditional Italian dish made with cannellini beans, garlic, onions, broth, and some type of small pasta, such as ditalini.??? Like many Italian classics, pasta e fagioli started out as a peasant dish, using inexpensive ingredients and featuring beans as a protein instead of meat.? Some versions are like a soup, and others more of a stew. Some use tomatoes. Some don?t.? Either way, it?s still considered cheap eats.??

pasta-fazool-10

Truth be told, I?d never heard of pasta e fagioli until? after I was married and started collecting cookbooks.? Hard to believe coming from an Italian girl from the Bronx, huh ? especially considering that I?ve been eating it all of my life???? In my neighborhood, pasta e fagioli didn?t exist -? but ?pasta fazool? did.??? That?s what our grandmothers call it.? That?s what our mothers called it.? And, that?s what we kids called it.? The Italian language is made up of many different regional dialects.? Few speak the standard textbook version.? In fact, some of these dialects are so different, that sometimes native Italians from different parts of the country even have a hard time understanding each other!?? The word for beans in the Neapolitan and other southern Italian dialects is pronounced ?fazool?.?? The families in the area where I grew up were predominantly southern Italian.? Ergo, we ate pasta fazool.

Now, I?ll bet you?re wondering where the cavemen part fits into all of this.? Well, as I mentioned above, pasta fazool is traditionally a meatless dish.? That?s why it?s called pasta fazool.? Otherwise, it would be called? pasta e carne, which is pasta and meat.? But, some people here at Chez SGCC are cavemen,? (like the person I?m married to),? and don?t consider a meal to truly be a meal unless it contains meat.?? I kid you not.? No matter how substantial or filling a vegetarian offering I set before him may be, to him -? it?s still a side dish.? Sigh??? Sometimes, I just tell him ?tough beans?.? Sometimes, I humor him and throw him a meaty bone.??? And other times, like this one, I secretly thank him for his pig-headedness, because adding meat to this dish turned out to be a very, very good idea.

pasta-fazool-1

For my caveman-style pasta fazool, I used some nice, organic, hot Italian sausage.? Think of it as an Italian version of pork and beans.? I removed the sausage meat from the casings and browned it up in a deep skillet.

Then, I saut?ed some carrots, celery, onions and garlic in all of that tasty, rendered pork fat.?? Sound good so far?

pasta-fazool-3

I also tossed in some fresh thyme, rosemary and a bay leaf, and let them work their magic.

After that, I added? the fazool and smushed about a third of them around in the pan.

pasta-fazool-5

Pasta fazool wouldn?t be the same for me without some diced tomatoes.

pasta-fazool-4

Then, in goes the broth and some water.? I like low-sodium chicken broth, but you can use vegetable or beef broth too.? Bring it up to a boil and then stir in the pasta.

pasta-fazool-6

Reduce the heat and let everything get all cozy together until the pasta is tender. The starch released from the pasta thickens up the broth to the perfect ?stewy? consistency, and you?ve got the most delicious, homey, hearty, meaty, stick-to-your-ribs pasta fazool evah.?? It doesn?t get much easier ? or tastier ? than that, folks!

Salute!

Malaria transmission peaks at much cooler temperatures than previously predicted

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? The most deadly type of malaria in humans and the one most prevalent in Africa is one that is very sensitive to climate. Previously published scientific studies put the optimal temperature for malaria transmission from mosquitos to humans at 31 degrees C (88 degrees F), but according to a new mathematical model, the temperature for peak transmission of the parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, is much, much lower.

"Clarifying the response of malaria transmission to temperature helps us anticipate how climate change might affect disease risk," says U.S. Geological Survey parasite ecologist and senior author Kevin Lafferty.

"This study has discovered important new temperature thresholds that govern the relationship between humans and insect-borne parasites in the environment," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "With hundreds of millions of cases of malaria reported in the tropics and subtropics each year, each new scientific finding brings us closer to more effectively combating this deadly disease."

The new research shows that malaria transmission is predicted to peak at 25 degrees C (77 degrees F), and dramatically decrease above 28 degrees C (82 degrees F). The model, based on mosquito thermal physiology, incorporated published data from laboratory experiments on mosquitoes. Unlike previous models, the new model fits observations of malaria transmission in Africa very well.

Erin Mordecai, Lafferty's doctoral student at University of California, Santa Barbara, was the lead author of USGS -led study, published in the journal Ecology Letters. Coauthors include other scientists from UCSB, Pennsylvania State University, University of Chicago, University of California, Los Angeles, and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

"We are really excited about the new findings, because they tell us temperatures as low as 82 degrees F may begin to slow malaria transmission," says Mordecai. "This study challenges the common assumption that hot temperatures simply speed up transmission."

Malaria parasites are transmitted to humans via certain mosquito species. The new mathematical model accounts for the fact that both mosquitoes and parasites suffer under high temperatures. Previously published models typically assumed that mosquito and malaria vitality continue to increase linearly with temperature.

To build their model, Mordecai and the research team reviewed laboratory studies that tracked the vitality and activity of malaria parasites and mosquitoes from low to high temperatures.

Lafferty, who holds joint appointments with UCSB and the USGS Western Ecological Research Center, hopes the findings will encourage more detailed studies on how malaria parasites and their mosquito vectors behave in the field.

"Predictive models are only as good as the data used to build them, and even ours has limitations," says coauthor Krijn Paaijmans of Penn State. "Oddly, there is little data on the response of mosquito species to temperature. Better laboratory studies and field ecology research will inform community health projects, and help them anticipate geographic shifts and seasonal shifts in malaria transmission risk."

Sadie Ryan of SUNY-ESF added, "Looking to the future, we are now using our model to build maps of the current and potential future spatial distribution of optimal conditions for malaria transmission."

The research was conducted as part of the Malaria and Climate Change Working Group supported by the Luce Environmental Science to Solutions Fellowship and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. NCEAS is supported by the National Science Foundation, UCSB and the State of California. Additional support came from NSF, USGS and the UCSB Michael J. Connell Trust.

As others skimp, rich splurge on holiday gifts

Scrooge-like spending patterns for the holidays appear to be a thing of the past for wealthy Americans, who are preparing to open their wallets this year after sitting on piles of cash.

The richest Americans, those in the top 10 percent, or with more than $100,000 in discretionary income, are predicted to spend more this holiday season than the remaining 90 percent of the country's population, according to a quarterly survey by American Express released on Thursday.

While most Americans will spend less on gifts this year, the top 10 percent raise their gift spending by 21.9 percent, to $19.2 billion, up from $15.7 billion in 2011. That compares with a projected drop in overall gift spending of 3.4 percent, to $66.3 billion, from $66.6 billion last year, according to the American Express 2012 Survey of Affluence and Wealth in America.

The spending by the wealthiest 10 percent will account for 29 percent of total spending on gifts.

$1 million watches and more: Neiman Marcus luxury gift catalog is out!

The rise is explained by the fact that wealthy Americans are sitting on huge piles of savings, said Jim Taylor, vice chairman of the Harrison Group, which conducted the study. Top earners are saving at a high rate - 61 percent of those in the top 1 percent are saving at least 25 percent of their income yearly. But for Americans outside the top 10 percent, only 14 percent are able to save at such an aggressive rate.

"If the floodgates open, it will lead to a capital boom," Taylor said.

The moneyed will also spend differently - shelling out for high-end luxury items, shunning gift cards and spending quite a bit on themselves, American Express said.

The study, conducted in September, surveyed 832 people with household incomes of more than $138,000 and discretionary income over $100,000.

There are other signs, however, that Americans overall are starting to spend more. While the American Express study only surveyed gift spending, an annual forecast by the National Retail Federation's forecast that looked more broadly at holiday spending - including decorations, greeting cards, holiday foods, flowers and other items, as well as gifts - saw a rise of 1.2 percent, to $749.51 per consumer, up from $740.57 last year.

The richest 10 percent may have more money, but in at least one way they are just like other Americans: they want gift cards. Some 60 percent of Americans desire gift cards, according to the NRF. However, the spouses or partners of the wealthy are not planning on getting them what they want, according to American Express.

Of the 34 percent of women who want a gift card to a specific retailer, only 11 percent of their spouses or partners plan on giving that as a gift. For the 18 percent of men who want a gift certificate to a restaurant, only 5 percent of their partners are likely to be wrapping that up.

"Nobody is going to give somebody a gift card for $5,000 rather than getting them that new bracelet. It's not quite the same emotional impact," said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners, a New Canaan, Connecticut-based company that analyzes retail trends.

Because of the disparity between what respondents want and what they're likely to get, the richest Americans plan to do a lot of shopping for themselves for the holidays - 46 percent of women in the wealthiest 10 percent say they will buy for themselves, and 27 percent of men, said the Harrison Group's Taylor.

Clothing, accessories and jewelry are among the top items women will be buying for themselves. Men will snap up clothing, fine liquor and gourmet foods.

Insight: Brazen Islamic militants showed strength before Benghazi attack

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In the months before the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya, U.S. and allied intelligence agencies warned the White House and State Department repeatedly that the region was becoming an increasingly dangerous vortex for jihadist groups loosely linked or sympathetic to al Qaeda, according to U.S. officials.

Despite those warnings, and bold public displays by Islamist militants around Benghazi, embassies in the region were advised to project a sense of calm and normalcy in the run-up to the anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States.

So brazen was the Islamist presence in the Benghazi area that militants convened what they billed as the "First Annual Conference of Supporters of Shariah (Islamic law)" in the city in early June, promoting the event on Islamist websites.

Pictures from the conference posted on various Internet forums featured convoys flying al Qaeda banners, said Josh Lefkowitz of Flashpoint-Intel.com, a firm that monitors militant websites. Video clips showed vehicles with mounted artillery pieces, he added.

A research report prepared for a Pentagon counter-terrorism unit in August said the Benghazi conference brought together representatives of at least 15 Islamist militias. Among the paper's conclusions: these groups "probably make up the bulk of al Qaeda's network in Libya."

Drawing on multiple public sources, the Library of Congress researchers who drafted the paper also concluded that al Qaeda had used the "lack of security" in Libya to establish training camps there. It also reported that "hundreds of Islamic militants are in and around Derna," where special camps provided recruits with "weapons and physical training."

President Barack Obama's administration has repeatedly said it had no specific advance warning of an attack like the one that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi on the night of September 11.

But the reports of militants' growing clout in eastern Libya, and attempts by violent jihadists to take advantage of fragile new governments across northern Africa following the Arab Spring, appear to raise new questions about whether U.S. embassies took proper security precautions, and if not, why not.

ARAB SPRING INSTABILITY

Washington has not definitively placed responsibility for the Benghazi attack on specific individuals or groups among the jihadist factions believed to be operating in or near Libya.

But U.S. officials have said that within hours of the Benghazi attacks, information from communications intercepts and U.S. informants indicated members of at least two groups may have been involved.

One is an al Qaeda offshoot, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb or AQIM, which was founded in Algeria and has region-wide ambitions. The other is a local militant faction called Ansar al-Sharia, which apparently has arms both in Benghazi and in Derna, long a hotbed of radicalism.

Like other militants seeking to take advantage of democratic openings and fragile governments created in last year's Arab Spring, the two groups are apparently seeking to exploit instability in Libya after the fall of dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

The links between these groups, other jihadist organizations and the original core al Qaeda militant group founded by the late Osama bin Laden are murky at best, U.S. officials and private analysts say.

"There is a complex mosaic of extremist groups in North Africa," a U.S. counterterrorism official said. "Given AQIM's interest in expanding its reach, it's not surprising that the group is trying to gain a foothold in Libya."

While hardly sweeping the continent, violent extremist groups appear to have found ungoverned safe havens across north Africa, from Mali in the west to Egypt's Sinai in the east.

In the last month, U.S. embassies in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen have also witnessed violent attacks.

Questions have been raised about security precautions at diplomatic facilities in those countries as well.

VETERAN HARD-LINE EXTREMISTS

Tunisia, the cradle of the Arab Spring, was the scene of some of the worst recent anti-American violence. Hardline Islamists there have been accused of inciting the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Tunis a few days after the Benghazi attacks. Four protesters were killed, cars were burned and the U.S. flag was torn down and replaced with a black Jihadist banner.

"The recent violence at the U.S. Embassy in Tunis highlights the unfortunate fact that extremists are increasingly active in Tunisia," the U.S. counterterrorism official said. "It's not prime AQIM territory, but there are veteran hard-line extremists in the country with nefarious intentions."

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen - home of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula or AQAP, one of the group's most dangerous offshoots - was also hard hit, and Washington sent Marines to bolster security there.

Nevertheless, last week in Sanaa, attackers shot and killed a senior Yemeni member of the embassy's security force on his way to work. Yemeni officials said the attack bore the hallmarks of AQAP.

Obama moved after the eruption of violence last month to beef up protection of U.S. diplomatic installations in the Arab world, sending in Marine contingents to several embassies and temporarily reducing the number of U.S. personnel at some posts.

The president also vowed to bring to justice those responsible for the Benghazi attack.

But the administration may have a hard time deciding whom to target. The increasingly diffuse nature of al Qaeda, its allies and sympathizers complicates the job of identifying precisely which individuals and groups were behind the attacks.

'IMPROVING' SECURITY?

Despite signs of growing militancy in Libya, and a string of attacks on international facilities in Benghazi over the spring and summer, two compounds housing U.S. personnel remained open in the city.

State Department messages and testimony at a recent congressional hearing showed the State Department responded slowly, if at all, to requests for beefed-up security in Libya, and sometimes turned such requests down.

Just hours before he died, a State Department cable showed, Stevens met with members of the Benghazi local council, who insisted security in the city was "improving" and the U.S. government should "pressure" American companies to invest.

Later that day, it said, Stevens was scheduled to launch a project called "American Space Benghazi," a public outreach center containing a "small library, computer lab and open space for programming."

What to bring baby home in?

We have a baby snowsuit that we've never used, b/c as PP stated, they aren't safe to use inside the car seat. And really, when do you ever take an infant outside just to "play in the snow?" Tell your mom to save her money!!!

We took our first two babies home (in Dec. and Jan in Wisconsin) dressed in a long sleeved onesie and sleeper, with a few blankies tucked around the top, a car seat cover on, and a blanket on top of the car seat cover (covering the face opening briefly when we went outside and then uncovered again for the ride). Worked out great.?

Essential Content Marketing Tips for Public ... - Online Marketing Blog

Public Relations Content MarketingContent has always played an essential part of effective Public Relations. However, PR pros that don?t sink their teeth into content strategy, development and measurement quickly and effectively, will be left behind as the future of PR evolves. That?s a fairly strong statement, but it?s incredibly important and timely.

Over the past 12 years of running a digital marketing and PR agency, we?ve seen major changes in the world of PR and media relations as social technologies, devices and ubiquitous internet access have opened the doors for all-the-time, ?everywhere? connectivity to the web.

That connectivity enables consumers and brands alike to: ?Create, Consume, Publish, Interact and Transact anywhere, anytime. From tablets to smartphones to getting digital content via your car, the relationship between technology and people has had a major impact on how information is discovered, consumed and shared or acted upon.

These significant changes represent challenges, but especially opportunities for the public relations industry in several categories:

Who Are the Media? ? It?s no secret that news media publishing models have experienced dramatic changes in the past 5 years with strong shifts to digital and new business models to meet consumer demand of real-time news and information on any device.

The ability for individuals to develop social networks and publish information to an audience that can match or exceed a traditional publication means that influencers are no longer limited to industry news publications and media. Connecting with and creating value with many niche influencers, whether they be journalists covering a specific topical beat to a passionate blogger with an engaged community, can be as impactful as a hit with a mainstream publication. Being useful with content further enhances niche influencer relations and provides more mutual value than relying on the ?big media hits? alone.

Content is the currency for building social relationships that can boost earned media.

Brands as Publishers ? Companies are increasingly leveraging content marketing (9 out of 10 B2B marketers used content marketing tactics ? CMI) to boost owned media as well as the effectiveness securing earned media. Companies are hiring editors, corporate journalists and editorial staff to create a publishing environment not unlike many publications.

If you want to ensure your brand gets in the media, then become the media.

Emerging Technology and Consumer Behaviors - Consumers being connected to the web all the time from anywhere and the normalcy of sharing on the social web has allowed mainstream media to tap into their own audiences to capture and report news (CNN iReport). Consumers are audiences but also publishers. Expectations have changed and many consumers expect not only to be informed but to participate with the news. Co-creation of content with consumers as well as industry influencers can lead to mutual satisfaction all around.

Ubiquitous connectivity has turned consumers into publishers and they expect participation.

So, what do these changes mean for public relations? Here are three key areas to consider:

1. Convergence: The roles, of PR, Marketing, Customer Service and other disciplines are increasingly integrated.

  • PR needs to cross train for skills, collaborate and integrate
  • PR can tap into other resources in an organization to reach mutual objectives
  • PR can show more value for its own efforts

Example:

We started incorporating SEO best practices with Digital Public Relations in late 2001, winning an engagement with the U.S. division of BT because no other PR agency was pitching the value of push and pull PR. ?By optimizing corporate news content for easy discovery via search, more journalists and bloggers were finding client information to use in news stories independent of, and sometimes in coordination with, outbound media relations pitching.

Being able to achieve increased media placements AND significantly increased web traffic from the media and buyers alike to the corporate website and newsroom created a significant advantage in demonstrate value for the ?optimized? PR effort.

Now with the prevalence of the social web and connected mobile devices, there are even more opportunities to leverage cross functional resources and skills to connect influencers and buyers alike with corporate content.

2. Become the Media:?Brands are adopting publishing models in their efforts to establish better connections with customers, and to achieve a competitive advantage.

  • PR must consider it?s ability to leverage earned media as well paid, earned and shared media
  • PR is no longer a gate keeper to content, but a creator and participant in the content ecosystem
  • PR can establish credibility with other media when it it has it?s own well know media property

Example:

Media Relations can be a tough game. Journalists and increasingly, bloggers are bombarded with pitches and it?s difficult to stand out, let alone get in the door. When the end objective is exposure, awareness and influence, why rely soley on 3rd party media? Why not become the media?

I realized this after a few years of blogging when I discovered that our humble little blog had more web traffic than most of the business publications in our region. If I wanted exposure to business professionals in our target market, I didn?t need to pitch an overworked, uninterested journalist on a deadline, I just needed to write and publish a thoughtful blog post. With one click, the post would be exposed to our tens of thousands of subscribers plus thousands of new daily visitors from search and social channels.

Companies are investing significantly in the ?brand as publisher? model to create a web presence that satisfies consumer needs for information and allows the brand to info-tain, educate and persuade with content. Some companies, like American Express and General Mills are so successful at this, they are able to monetize marketing editorial with outside advertisers and syndication.

3. Adapt & Optimize. Repeat.?Technology and consumer behaviors are evolving quickly and the ability for businesses to attract, engage and persuade their public requires strong adaptability and a continuous effort towards optimizing PR effectiveness.

  • PR needs to continuously monitor consumer and technology trends
  • PR must develop a cycle of objective, audience, approach, tactics, measurement and refinement.
  • Continuous efforts to improve performance of how PR content is discovered, consumed and acted on will be essential

Example:

As our online marketing and PR work with companies evolved, we were often at a disadvantage when having to rely solely on client?s limited content, promotion and measurement resources. As a result, we provide ongoing training to clients to improve their cross-functional skills but also proactively share industry shifts translated into strategic or tactics so the business can adapt it?s marketing accordingly. ?A real-time example of adapt and optimize is the practice of Newsjacking combined with social media promotion nd SEO.

When a competitor launches a new product and gets major media coverage, a brand might decide to parody something in that message or provide a counter point and promote it through social channels as it gains momentum. Knowing people will look for more information than what?s covered in the initial story, content about the story can be optimized for search to make it the best answer and easiest for people to find.

A diversity of content types that build in social and search optimization is essential, while considering the limited content production resources. Here are a few content types that when integrated into an effective content marketing strategy, can add tremendous reach for Public Relations and Marketing:

Evergreen Content ? Create content that is timeless and can serve as a resource to the media, to bloggers, or end consumers at any time.

Co-Created Content ? Leverage industry and niche thought leader relationships by co-creating content in partnership with the brand. Participants self interest in exposure provides a built-in social promotion component to the content object. Prominent customers and partners could also participate in co-created content.

Curated Content - Some companies produce a significant amount of content but it?s not curated in a way to take full advantage for exposure opportunities. External content can also be curated to aggregate news as a help resource. Curation with added brand narrative provides a useful resource to the media and gives an indication of perspective that could be useful for their own publication. It also provides an opportunity to demonstrate thought leadership.

Repurposed Content - It?s one thing to repost a press release as a blog post, but it?s another thing entirely to plan repurposed content in an editorial plan to maximize and optimize the reach and value of the information.

If a business creates a substantial amount of content, there are many opportunities for repurposing to specific verticals or across horizontal publishing channels like email, social networks, blogs and byline articles. ?If an organization doesn?t create a lot of content, then repurposing may serve the purpose of extending the value of resources and gain additional reach without a corresponding increase in resources.

I challenge public relations professionals to take a bigger picture look at how these changes and the integration of content marketing with PR can empower the role of PR to have greater and more significant impact on bottom line business goals. Think about how content marketing can create more owned assets with which to attract, engage and inspire earned and shared media. Those same assets can work with paid media for customer acquisition objectives as well.

Along with tips and tools, the topics within this post are what I?m presenting on at the?PRSA International Conference in San Francisco this week. Here are the details:

No More Silos? Just Social Business - The Social Workplace

From:?Holistic Social Relationships, Breaking Down Social Media Silos and Enabling a Coordinated Brand Voice, Astute Solutions

A holistic approach to social listening and engagement can?transform your business into a social business, help you?quickly find relevance in the massive social world and allow?you to use the information for the betterment of your entire?organization.

At first blush it might seem like marketing should take the lead and ?own? social?media and there are plenty of benefits available that can be leveraged to enhance?the brand.?But once you identify the numerous stakeholders who have or will find tremendous value in social?information,?it quickly becomes clear: social media is not all about marketing, sales, PR,?HR or even support.

It?s about the complete business and the impact it has is enormous.

Each part of your business can benefit from social conversations.?These conversations reveal incredibly valuable information, sometimes?information that would be costly and difficult to achieve through surveys?and focus groups. A conversation that starts with a support question?can quickly turn into an opportunity to up-sell, cross-sell or to provide a?valuable customer testimonial. A question to your legal department can?shift to investor relations or product development. A shipping inquiry?might end up being a PR discussion. And so on?

But many organizations who have jumped into social, seriously misuse their?data and in the process minimize the true impact the information has.?Why? Silos.

The true benefit of social becomes significantly diminished when valuable?information fails to make its way to those who need it most.?But you?ll never know any of those things if they?re hidden away in?departmental silos.

But it?s not easy to break down these silos. Why? It?s the same problem most?companies have had for decades: departments want to control their own?systems and tools and have very different needs.

  • Customer Service cares about:
    • Reputation management
    • Customer notices
    • Customer service
    • Talent acquisition
  • HR cares about:
    • Community building (former and future employees)
    • Research
    • Talent acquisition
  • Marketing cares about:
    • Social profiles
    • Conversion
    • Branding & PR
    • Sales support

Can this be fixed? Can these silos be eliminated or at least bridged?or connected? The answer is yes. In fact, it?s absolutely essential that
organizations find a way to integrate their social media efforts and systems.

In its latest best practice guide, Astute Solutions identifies six lessons to help organizations?break down social media silos and enable a coordinated brand voice:

Lesson #1: the majority of social media conversations aren?t?relevant to the business, but those that are can be incredibly?valuable. Finding those relevant conversations is critical.

Lesson # 2: Social isn?t to be owned, it?s to be leveraged as an integral,?vital and strategic business channel. Getting access to relevant?information is important. Delivering it to key stakeholders is critical.

Lesson #3:?It?s not enough to simply monitor the social universe.?You must be able to find and act on critical issues in?real time and do?so in a way that doesn?t dampen the bottom line.

Lesson #4: Consumers want to tell you more about what they like?and don?t like. They?ll tell you in great detail about how they use your?products and services. You have to make their feedback a strategic part?of your organization.

Lesson #5: Integration is important and the connecting of all parts of?the organization to social systems is absolutely critical. Build a common?platform based upon the needs of your service origination and you?ll?find more flexibility and access to the most important information.

Lesson #6: Collecting data is terrific, but look closely for actionable?feedback from consumers AND act on it!

Disadvantage Of Cloud Computing | Tech News

Cloud Computing technology is an advanced technology which uses internet and central remote?servers to maintain data and application. This technology allows consumers and businesses to use?application without installation. Through this you can access your personal data from any computer?with internet access over the server. Cloud Computing is a general term for anything that involves?delivering hosted services over the Internet. Yahoo email, Gmail, or Hotmail etc are the example of?Cloud Computing. This technology is broadly divided into three categories i.e. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The work is taken from?by the cloud symbol which is usually used to define Internet in flowcharts and diagrams.

cloud computing disadvantage

Storing data over internet it good as your data will be safe if your computer will crash but along with?it cloud computing have few disadvantages.

  • Cloud computing works online and if you are running any business over the internet then?you must be online all the time to serve the customers. Cloud computing is disadvantageous?as you will be offline when the server is offline. Your business will be totally depends on the?consistency of internet connection which suffer you a lot. If the internet connection is slow?not available then work will endanger.
  • ?Security issue is quite important point of cloud computing. Is your data safe over the server?or not? It is analysed by cloud computing vendors that if the server will be attacked then?your data will also be attacked and you will lost it which is not the safest point of storing?data.
  • In cloud computing application inflexibility is there. If your document is made in different?application then you cannot save on the server like Google docs.
  • As mentioned above that your business will totally depend upon cloud computing?application, regarding this Anita Campbell said, ?Customer service for Web apps leaves a?lot to be desired. All too many cloud-based apps make it difficult to get customer service?promptly or at all. Sending an email and hoping for a response within 48 hours is not an?acceptable way for most of us to run a business?.

It is analysed that you can run small businesses on this technology as it is not difficult to handle. If?we talk about data storage then keep a copy of all your data along with you in external hard disc.?Now if you lost your data from the server by any attack no need to worry. You are safe!

IBM's 3Q earnings likely to extend growth streak | wishtv.com

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? IBM Corp.'s third-quarter results are expected to extend the technology company's nearly decade-long streak of earnings growth.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: The numbers, scheduled to come out Tuesday after the stock market closes, will probably illustrate the stability of IBM's strategy, which emphasizes selling software and a variety of technology services to businesses and government agencies.

The company, which is based in Armonk, N.Y., locks many of its customers into contracts that guarantee regular payments even in tough economic times. That provides IBM with some insulation from the economic uncertainty that has made it tougher for other technology companies to close deals, particularly in Europe and in China, in recent months.

It also helps that IBM no longer has a direct connection to the personal computer industry, where a sales slump has been hurting the makers of microprocessors and desktop and laptop machines.

The business software and technology services sector also generate higher profit margins that selling computer equipment, another advantage working in IBM's favor.

All those factors are why analysts are confident that IBM's earnings for the three months ending in September will at least match the projections that influence investors' decisions on whether to buy or sell a stock. If IBM hits the target set by analysts, it will be the 39th consecutive quarter in which IBM's earnings have been higher than the same time in the previous year.

IBM also could be benefiting from the woes of Hewlett-Packard Co., which also sells business software and consulting services. HP's financial condition has been deteriorating, trigging an extensive reorganization in an attempt to turn things around. Those factors might cause some corporate customers to consider with a vendor such as IBM that is on more stable footing.

The biggest question about IBM's third-quarter performance center on its revenue for the period. Like other companies that have a lot of customers outside the U.S., IBM is being hurt by the weakening euro because sales made in that currency are converting into fewer dollars than last year.

WHY IT MATTERS: IBM is the world's largest technology-services company. Its results provide a gauge of businesses' appetite for technology spending.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts, on average, are expecting earnings of $3.61 per share on revenue of $25.4 billion, according to a poll by FactSet. The earnings estimate excludes the costs of past acquisitions and certain other items unrelated to IBM's ongoing business.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: IBM earned $3.28 per share, after subtracting certain items, on revenue of $26.2 billion.

Syria rebels capture air defense base, fight to hold highway

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels captured an air defense base east of Aleppo on Friday as government forces battled insurgents on several fronts across the country, activists said.

Clashes were also taking place at a military barracks close to Maarat al-Nuaman, a town on the main highway to the northwestern city of Aleppo which was seized by rebel forces earlier this week, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The pro-opposition Observatory gave a death toll for Thursday of more than 260 people, including civilians and combatants on both sides in violence in the capital and the north, west and east.

It said 92 soldiers were killed on Thursday, which would be one of the highest daily casualty counts on the government side since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out in March 2011.

The official SANA news agency also reported fighting nationwide and said dozens of rebels, which it called "mercenary terrorists", had been killed.

The reports could not be independently verified but they indicate a rapidly intensifying conflict, with the death tolls of the past several weeks far exceeding previous months.

Although international attention has focused on the Turkish border in the past week, Aleppo and the city of Homs - north of Damascus and near the border with Lebanon - are being fought over and clashes take place almost daily in the suburbs of the capital Damascus as well as in the countryside.

Turkey scrambled two fighter planes to the border with Syria on Friday after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin.

The Observatory said the air defense base seized by the rebels was located in al-Tana village by the Koris military airport on the road east from Aleppo to al-Raqqa.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, has been contested since July. The rebel capture of Maarat al-Nuaman cut the highway between Aleppo and Homs, the main route for the government to resupply and reinforce the northern city.

SANA said government forces were mounting operations to clear Aleppo's Karm al-Jabal area of rebels on Friday.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict which started out as a popular uprising against four decades of Assad family rule then descended into civil war. The armed forces have relied heavily on air power and artillery to hold back the rebels.

Fighting has also spilled over the borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, raising concern that the fighting could spread across the region, now home to 340,000 Syrian refugees.
