(AP) ? Americans cut back on spending last month while their income remained flat. The weakness in part reflected disruptions from Superstorm Sandy that could slow economic growth for the rest of the year.

The Commerce Department said Friday that consumer spending dropped 0.2 percent in October. It was the weakest figure since May, and it compared with a 0.8 percent spending increase in September.

Income had risen 0.4 percent in September.

Work interruptions caused by the storm reduced wages and salaries in October by about $18 billion at an annual rate, the government said. The storm affected 24 states, with the most severe damage in New York and New Jersey.

Consumers may also be scaling back on spending because of fears about the "fiscal cliff." That's the name for automatic tax increases and spending cuts that will take effect in January if Congress and the Obama administration fail to strike a budget deal by then.

"The upshot is that although both incomes and spending will probably bounce back in November, the underlying trend is weak," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

The depressed spending figures suggest that the economy is growing more slowly in the October-December quarter than it did in the July-September quarter. Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.

Dales predicts U.S. economic growth will tumble from the 2.7 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter to a weak 1 percent in the October-December period. That's too low to lower the unemployment rate, now at 7.9 percent.

Even discounting the effects of Sandy, income and spending gains would have been meager. Income would have risen a still-weak 0.1 percent. Spending would have been essentially flat, Dales estimated.

After-tax income adjusted for inflation fell 0.1 percent in October. And spending, when adjusted for inflation, dropped 0.3 percent ? the biggest such decline in three years.

The saving rate edged up slightly to 3.4 percent of after-tax income in October, compared with 3.3 percent in September.

Many economists say growth will rebound in the New Year once the rebuilding phase begins in the Northeast.

And if President Barack Obama and Congress can reach a budget deal to avert to fiscal cliff, some economists, including Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, are predicting a strong year for the economy.

Still, the storm's impact has slowed sales in the nation's most densely populated region ahead of the crucial holiday shopping season.

The International Council of Shopping Centers said 18 major retailers reported sales rose 1.7 percent in November compared with the same period a year ago. The group had been expecting sales growth between 4.5 percent and 5.5 percent.

The economic damage from the storm may be starting to fade, though. Retailers are reporting solid sales over the Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend.

And applications for unemployment benefits have fallen from an 18-month high in the first week of November. That surge was driven by applications in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Still, the increase in unemployment applications earlier this month will likely depress job growth for November. Many economists predict that net job growth for November will range between 25,000 and 75,000 ? well below the 171,000 jobs that were added in October.

Many flame retardants in house dust at unsafe levels, study finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A peer-reviewed study of the largest number of flame retardants ever tested in homes found that most houses had levels of at least one flame retardant that exceeded a federal health guideline.

The journal Environmental Science & Technology will publish the study online on Nov. 28.

The study led by scientists at Silent Spring Institute tested for 49 flame retardant chemicals in household dust, the main route of exposure for people and especially for children. Forty-four flame retardant chemicals were detected and 36 were found in at least 50% of the samples, sometimes at levels of health concern. The flame retardants found in house dust are in furniture, textiles, electronics, and other products and include hormone disruptors, carcinogens, and chemicals with unknown safety profiles.

The highest concentrations were found for chlorinated organophosphate flame retardants. This chemical group includes TCEP and TDCIPP (or chlorinated "Tris"), which are listed as carcinogens under California's Proposition 65.

TDBPP (or brominated "Tris") was banned from children's pajamas in 1977 due to health concerns but is still allowed in other products, and was present in 75% of homes tested in 2011.

There are no federal rules requiring that flame retardants be safety tested. Among the limited number of flame retardants with EPA health risk guidelines, the study found five at levels higher than those guidelines -- BDE 47, BDE 99, TCEP, TDCIPP and BB 153.

"Our study found that people are exposed to toxic flame retardants every day. These hazardous chemicals are in the air we breathe, the dust we touch and the couches we sit on. Many flame retardants raise health concerns, including cancer, hormone disruption, and harmful effects on brain development. It is troubling to see that a majority of homes have at least one flame retardant at levels beyond what the federal government says is safe. Infants and toddlers who spend much time on the floor are at higher risk for exposure," said Dr. Robin Dodson, a co-author of the study and a scientist with the Silent Spring Institute.

The study was conducted in California homes, because furniture manufacturers use flame retardants in products sold throughout the U.S. in order to meet California's stricter flammability standard. Many health experts have called on California Governor Jerry Brown to make good on his promise to amend the requirement, which affects the health of people around the country.

This study complements a separate study, also being published in Environmental Science & Technology on Nov. 28, that found many potentially problematic flame retardants in couches. Both studies break new ground by revealing the wide range of flame retardants in use. The Silent Spring Institute study demonstrates that flame retardant chemicals in couches and other products wind up in house dust at levels of health concern.

Two PBDE formulations have been phased out due to health concerns, but other flame retardants with considerable evidence of toxicity, such as chlorinated organophosphates and HBCYD, appear to remain at high or increasing levels of use. Every home tested had HBCYD, which was prioritized by regulators in the US and Europe because of its persistence and concerns about human reproductive, neurological, and developmental effects.

Other flame retardants being used as replacements for PBDEs have unknown health implications. The study found that levels of chemicals in Firemaster? 550 increased from 2006 to 2011, likely because it is being used as a replacement for PentaPBDE, which was phased out.

"When one toxic flame retardant is phased out, it's being replaced by another chemical we either know is dangerous or suspect may be. It's not comforting to swap one hazardous chemical for its evil cousin. Instead, we should test chemicals before they are allowed on the market," said Dr. Julia Brody, executive director of the Silent Spring Institute and co-author of the study.

Many of the detected chemicals show evidence of hormone disruption; in particular the PBDEs, HBCYD, and TBBPA affect thyroid hormone, which is important for brain development. The breakdown products of TDBPP (brominated "Tris") damage DNA and cause mammary tumors in animal studies, raising concern about breast cancer in people.

"The potential harm from fire retardant chemicals used in furniture is very concerning. My research found that the California fire standard provides no meaningful protection against the hazard it addresses -- furniture ignited by small flames. In view of the toxicity of substances put into furniture foam to meet the California standard, the rule does more harm than good," according to Dr. Vytenis Babrauskas, an independent fire safety scientist.

Missing moon rocks found in Minnesota storage site

The Genesis Rock recovered during the Apollo 15 mission (Wikicommons)Several rocks taken from humankind's first lunar landing have been unearthed once again, with the moon rocks this time turning up in a Minnesota storage area.

The Star Tribune reports that the pebble-sized samples collected by the Apollo 11 voyage in 1969 somehow ended up in a government storage area in St. Paul.

"The Apollo 11 moon rocks were found amongst military artifacts in a storage area at the Veterans Service Building in St. Paul," Army Maj. Blane Iffert, the former state historian for the Minnesota National Guard, told the paper. "When I searched the Internet to find additional information about the moon rocks, I knew we had to find a better means to display this artifact."

Each state was given a sample of the moon rocks after Apollo 11's successful voyage.

On Wednesday, the rocks will be transferred to the state's Science and Technology Academies Reinforcing Basic Aviation and Space Exploration (STARBASE) educational program.

Even if Iffert had wanted to sell the rocks, rather than donate them, he wouldn't have had much of a choice. As CBS News notes, moon rocks are considered a national treasure and selling them is illegal.

But before anyone starts making jokes at Minnesota's expense, Iffert says his discovery actually puts the state on the brighter side of moon rock history.

Reportedly, 180 of the 270 Goodwill Moon Rock samples former President Nixon gave to the 50 states after the Apollo 11 and 17 missions are currently unaccounted for.

Former NASA investigator? Joseph Gutheinz said 11 states are currently missing their moon rock samples from the Apollo 11 mission, including Alaska, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Texas.

"We are honored to have this in our collection to preserve for future generations," said Pat Gaarder, deputy director for the Minnesota Historical Society, in a statement. "It is also exciting to think that our collection includes artifacts from across the globe and, now with these moon rocks, the galaxy."

ConocoPhillips to sell Kazakh oilfield stake to India's ONGC for $5 billion

(Reuters) - ConocoPhillips said it plans to sell its 8.4 percent stake in Kazakhstan's giant Kashagan oil field to India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd for about $5 billion as the Indian company looks to make up for flagging production.

Kashagan, the world's biggest oilfield discovery since 1968, holds an estimated 30 billion barrels of oil-in-place, of which 8-12 billion are potentially recoverable. First production from the field is expected in 2013.

India, the world's fourth-biggest oil importer, buys nearly 80 percent of its oil needs as expanding refining capacity has outpaced local oil output. State-run ONGC's local oil output has been almost stagnant for years.

ConocoPhillips said the carrying value of the assets related to its Kashagan interest was about $5.5 billion as of September 30.

The company said it would take an after-tax impairment of about $400 million in the fourth quarter to reduce the carrying value. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013.

ONGC, India's third-biggest company by market value, has been investing to maintain output from its old fields and has capital spending plans of around 340 billion Indian rupees ($6.12 billion) both this year and next. The company is under pressure from the government to meet rising demand.

The acquisition is the largest ever for ONGC, and marks the biggest outbound deal from India since mobile phone operator Bharti Airtel bought mobile phone operations in 15 African countries for $9 billion in 2010 from Kuwait-based telecoms group Zain .

ONGC Videsh, the arm of ONGC that invests in overseas assets, said the acquisition would likely add 1 million tonnes (20,000 barrels per day) to its annual production over 25 years with the company's share of output significantly higher in later stages of development. ONGC Videsh's production in the year to March 31, 2012 was 8.7 million tonnes.

Kazakhstan, home to 3 percent of the world's recoverable oil reserves and the largest former Soviet oil producer after Russia, has sought to revise deals struck with foreign energy companies in the lean post-Soviet years.

ConocoPhillips has been conducting a disposal program to reduce its non-core overseas assets to reduce debt and increase its exploration and dividend budgets.

It has already exceeded its target of asset sales worth $20 billion by the end of 2012, including the sale of its stake in Lukoil , Russia's second-biggest oil producer.

"(The) purchase price of $5 billion is at the high end of our prior expectation of $4 to $5 billion," analysts at Simmons and Co wrote in a note to clients.

"This is a positive for ConocoPhillips as it marks important progress on their asset divestiture program, which is needed to support the capital program and dividend."

ConocoPhillips shares down slightly at $56.39 in early trading.

The company said it notified government authorities in Kazakhstan, and its partners in the North Caspian Sea production-sharing agreement of its intention to sell the stake.

Kazakh Oil and Gas Minister Sauat Mynbayev last month disclosed ConocoPhillips' plans to sell its stake in the field.

The Kashagan field is jointly controlled by state-run KazMunaiGas and six international companies, including Eni Spa ExxonMobil Corp , Royal Dutch Shell Plc , Total SA and Inpex Corp .

The right information and insight could lead to a much more advantageous outcome. Inaccurate information or an absence of competitive research can lead to disaster.

In the competitive world of content marketing and optimization, it?s essential for companies of all sizes and industries to understand their online marketplace in order to gain a business advantage.

Developing a competitive strategy is essential in today?s dynamic search and social web and an effective approach starts by understanding both the broader?Search Landscape and internal Website SEO Readiness.

The approach to competitive search and social media research can vary widely by situation because no business is the same. It?s essentially always going to involve some kind of information capture, assessment and comparison.

A new business entering a competitive market with companies that have mature Internet marketing programs may need to uncover key weaknesses in their competitor?s marketing efforts in order to compete ?David and Goliath? style.? In a situation with companies that have very similar levels of Internet marketing resources and effort, competitive research may uncover weaknesses or unrealized opportunities that can create advantage.

In all cases, an understanding of the competitive search and social media landscape will help content marketers differentiate to better attract and engage with customers.

For example, one entrepreneur in the self-help area of memory and IQ improvement wanted an online marketing program that would help achieve top visibility on Google for the word ?brain.? With a new website and nearly 700 million competing search results for the search term, a first glance evaluation indicated the outcome to be unlikely with any reasonable budget and time frame.

Further research into the search landscape to identify competitors did not reveal the list of online puzzle and learning websites the entrepreneur considered ?competition?, but a mix of Wikipedia, University (Harvard), industry publication and resource websites with large numbers of web pages and a long history of search relevance for the topic.

In the search and social media marketing world, the competition isn?t always who you think.? What companies need to understand is that online competition isn?t just businesses competing for market share in the business world, but information and content published from a variety of sources that compete for search engine and social media users? attention.

In the case of the ?brain? customer, thoughtful analysis of the search and social media landscape revealed popular forums and social networking groups focused on topics related to what the target website visitor would find useful. A more diverse, yet relevant keyword mix proved to be more attainable and more importantly, a better reflection of the interests amongst the target community.

A larger group of keyword targets promoted through the optimization of content and social media channels resulted in the entrepreneur?s website reaching over 300,000 unique visitors per month and a decision to change the business model to advertising over product sales because of the volume of traffic. Had the entrepreneur focused only on ?brain? without conducting competitive and marketplace research, they might still be selling just a few learning games per month instead of a thriving website supported by an active community and strong search engine traffic.

Of course, the research that goes into developing an aggressive search and online marketing strategy goes beyond these basics. There are 5 audits we use for developing a more effective approach to dominating the search and social web including: topic/keywords audit, technical SEO audit, on/off site content audit, social media audit and a linking audit. More on those in my next post.

Vampires foil Tooth Fairy, Santa to claim box office win

(Reuters) - Teen vampire film "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" continued to take a bite out of the domestic box office, drawing $64 million in ticket sales over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend to finish ahead of James Bond film "Skyfall."

After opening with a massive $141.1 million last weekend, the finale of the "Twilight" franchise brought in a holiday swarm of fans to see teen favorites Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, pushing "Breaking Dawn" to $227 million in total domestic ticket sales.

"Skyfall," starring Daniel Craig in the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise, finished second, collecting $51 million in weekend ticket sales in the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates compiled by the box office division of Hollywood.com.

"Lincoln," Steven Spielberg's historical film on the last days of President Abraham Lincoln, grabbed third with $34.1 million over the Wednesday-through-Sunday period.

Making its debut in fourth place with $32.6 million was the animated film "Rise of the Guardians," featuring the voices of Chris Pine and Alec Baldwin as the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus and other childhood favorites who save the world.

"Life of Pi," based on Yann Martel's 2001 best-seller about a boy who survives on a raft with a tiger after his ship sinks, collected $30.15 million for a strong fifth-place finish.

"Rise of the Guardians," produced by Dreamworks Animation for roughly $145 million, had been projected by distributor Paramount Pictures to gross $35 million in its first five days, according to Box Office Mojo.

Based on "The Guardians of Childhood" book series by children's author William Joyce, the film will be the last Paramount will release for Dreamworks, whose films will be distributed next year by News Corp's Fox studio.

Anne Globe, Dreamworks' chief marketing officer, pointed to "the great parent reactions we've seen" to the film, and noting it was among the few choices for families through the end of year, said the studio was "hoping for very long legs through the holidays."

The Ang Li film "Life of Pi," on the other hand, performed stronger than expected. "We clearly exceeded our pre-release expectations," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox.

"We're seeing word of mouth in action, and a remarkably balanced demographic," including strong ticket sales among those under 25, he said, adding "Many felt it was impossible to film, but Ang Li pulled it off."

The remake of the 1984 Cold War film "Red Dawn," finished seventh with $22 million in sales, behind animated feature "Wreck It Ralph"'s $23 million take.

"Red Dawn" arrived at movie theaters four years after it was shot by MGM, but was delayed when the studio filed for bankruptcy in 2010. Last year, MGM decided to digitally alter the villains in the movie, inserting North Koreans instead of Chinese, after Hollywood began courting Chinese companies to help finance its films.

Propelled by the vampires, secret agents, presidents and nursery school favorites, Hollywood ticket sales totaled $290 million for the holiday weekend, beating the holiday weekend high mark of $273 million recorded in 2009. Hollywood studios often release their biggest holiday films on Wednesday to take advantage of school breaks the day before Thanksgiving.

The continued rush of fans to see teen favorites Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner pushed the "Twilight" installment to $227 million in total domestic ticket sales, making it the year's sixth-largest, according to figures compiled by Box Office Mojo.

"Skyfall" with $221.7 million is just behind at number seven, while the year's box office champ remains "Marvel's The Avengers," which has taken in $623 million to date.

On patrol with a shark ranger in Indonesia

Conservation International works with Indonesian children to help them learn how to protect the most diverse underwater region in the world. ?NBC News' Richard Engel reports.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia ? The remote Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat is home to an underwater treasure trove of coral reefs and tremendous biodiversity, miles away from polluted urban centers and human encroachment.

The faraway islands in Western Papua, regarded by many marine experts as having the potential to help restore the world's ailing coral reefs, are vulnerable to the unchecked exploitation of a lucrative treasure that is rapidly disappearing from Indonesia's waters: sharks.

China's growing appetite for the de rigueur shark fin soup has attracted fishermen from elsewhere in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to the waters around Raja Ampat's 1,500 islands.

Alarmed, conservationists and local villagers worked together to create the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in 2005, establishing a 165-square-mile "No-Take Zone" that banned fishing.

When a neighboring village requested to take part, the area was expanded to 472 square miles, roughly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Misool team also recruited a group of rangers to help patrol the waters for illegal fishermen. Earlier this year, NBC News had an opportunity to go on patrol with Abdul Razak Tamher, 31, one of the first rangers.

Q: Before 2005, what were shark and fish stocks like in this area of Raja Ampat?

A: Before 2005, one of the main occupations of the people of my village was fishing. That's what we did every day and one of the big things fished were sharks. By the 2000s there were very few sharks left in the area, but in the 1980s and 90s when I was fishing there were lots of sharks. A lot of people used dynamite and potassium cyanide for fishing.

Q: So did villagers in Misool know they had to change the way things were done?

A: At that time, people here really didn't think much about shark or marine conservation. We didn't know shark fishing was illegal (prior to the formation of the No-Take Zone in 2005, the local governor had actually signed a law against shark fishing) because nobody from the government came out here to tell or educate us that it was illegal and bad for the ecology to fish sharks.

It was really through the efforts of the resort to educate the village about the importance of sharks and protecting the marine environment that we saw the importance of it and began to appreciate the natural beauty ourselves. Now if people from my village hear of a shark fishing boat coming into this area, they get really upset.

NBC News' Richard Engel talks to a Conservation International scientist as he identifies a new species of fish.

Q: Is conservation a completely foreign idea here? Isn't there a long tradition of seasonal fishing and spiritual beliefs around protecting certain animals?

A:?We've embraced principles of conservation since the beginning of our culture. They were simple ideas, but they still worked for us. For example, we would harvest clams from the ocean for six months, then depending on the ocean conditions, we would close that area for sometimes up to a year before harvesting again.

Many of the original families in this area are forbidden to eat different sea creatures like sharks or turtles or other kinds of fish. In each case, there is a reason why each family respects and protects a certain animal. It could be that a family member or fisherman generations ago was rescued by that species or guided to land at a time of need. Many still believe that if someone in the family breaks this taboo, they will get sick or something bad will happen.

Q:?In 2006, the rangers were formed with just five of you and a few of you were actually former shark fishermen. What made you make such a dramatic change in your life?

?A:?I personally wasn't involved in shark fishing, but other original rangers that were here in the beginning and their village elders were shark fishermen. Even though they were shark fishermen and lived off the harvest of the ocean, they realized that they needed to preserve this area and the marine life for future generations to come.

Many of us felt ? and still feel today ? that if we told our children or grandchildren that there were lots of fish and sharks in the sea around these islands and they went there and saw none they would think that we were liars and we just couldn't allow that to happen.

Q:?What was it like in the early days with the rangers?

A:?The rangers weren't really effective until 2009 because at that time there was only one speed boat that was always busy getting lumber for the construction of the resort. So we would only go out if we saw an illegal boat go past the resort. From 2006-2009, we went out almost every day. In the months of June and July, the area was choked with shark finning boats from as far away as Java that cast long lines with sometimes 1,000 or 2,000 hooks to catch sharks.

To expel the foreign boats, it wasn't a problem. We would just go up to the boats and tell them leave and they would go. Local fishermen were tougher. Most of the problems had to do with local fishermen not agreeing with the contract we signed with Misool Eco Reserve to create the no-take zones or claiming they were not around when the contract had been reached. They would also say we have it easy since we work as rangers and make a lot of money, so we don't need to fish like they did.

Q:?How soon after the reserve formed did you start to see results from the sanctuary?

A:?After two or three years, I started to see a lot of sharks in the lagoons and my friends who went diving began to see more fish. There were just some researchers here in Misool who were shocked by the amount of fish who were in the protected areas. The results have just been amazing.

Q:?How have the villages in the area adapted to the sanctuary?

A:?In the beginning, there were a lot of problems with the villagers not understanding the rangers' mission. The most important thing we did to get people behind us was to use Adat, or traditional Papuan village law. This was done by developing a close relationship with the ancestral village head, as he holds the power of the village and so people will listen to what he says. If we didn't have the village head, then it would have been difficult to enforce the rules of the sanctuary.

Q:?What's next for the rangers in the coming years?

A:?We all hope the ranger patrol can continue forever and that we have the resources to keep recruiting young people from the villages to the patrol. We now have three ranger stations built and we hope to have three rangers in every station with small, fuel-efficient boats that can be used to spot illegal fishermen and intercept them until support can show up.

The other big problem we'd like to fix is communication. Radio communication in this region of Raja Ampat is difficult because all the radios we have now are line-of-sight and the islands interfere with signal within short distances. The plan is to build a main radio/repeater station that will cover the entire area so that there is clear contact throughout the sanctuary.

One Direction & The Wanted Twitter Feud Gets Heated

Two of today’s hottest boy bands are in a serious Twitter feud. The boys of One Directions and The Wanted took to Twitter to well basically talk trash about each other and it got a little heated. The little Twitter feud between The Wanted and One Direction all began when Zayn Malik, singer for One Direction, sent a Tweet dissing The Wanted’s Max George. See George uploaded a picture of himself and Psy with the Tweet “Psy, writing, ?The first step is acceptance #geekoftheweek.? For whatever reason Zayn decided he was going to comment on that with the below Tweet. @MaxTheWanted p.s your display just how’s how much of a wannabe you are Clearly that didn’t go over to well with Max, so began the war of words that went a little something like this. ?That?s not very nice. I was just starting to like you and your RnB hits.? After that reinforcements were brought in so to speak with Tony Parker speaking up for his bandmate Max. ?I think ?1 stripes? got his knickers in a twist bro,? New initiatives unveiled at the International Golf Travel Market

New initiatives unveiled at the International Golf Travel Market

Peter Walton (right) and Jonathan Smith at IGTM in the Algarve/Photo ? Paul Bernhardt

By Mark Harding & Paul Bernhardt, eTN Ambassadors, Portugal | Nov 22, 2012

PORTUGAL (eTN) - A new partnership between the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) and the Golf Environmental Organization (GEO) was announced during the 15th edition of the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM).

The IGTM is the annual golf trade show for the golf tourism industry, which is organized by Reed Travel Exhibitions. IAGTO is the official association partner. The Tivoli Marina Hotel at Vilamoura, in southern Portugal?s Algarve province, staged this year?s event.

IAGTO President and Chief Executive Peter Walton unveiled the partnership during his opening address to delegates. He stressed the direct correlation between environmental sustainability and social responsibility and the experience that a golfer enjoys, and added: ?You might not immediately see the connection between environmental sustainability and customer satisfaction, but any golfer enjoys a game more if they are walking through a preserved natural habitat.

?Water conservation is not an environmental nicety, it is an economic necessity. We can also talk about the wider role of social responsibility and employment and the effect it has on the community.?

Eco and ethical tourism is growing as a percentage of the overall tourism industry, leading Travel Weekly to project that by the end of 2012 around 25% of the world?s travel market could belong to sustainable tourism. Positive environmental and social actions are, therefore, directly relevant to a growing number of consumers.

?Sustainability is a great fit for golf and a potentially valuable innovation for the golf tourism industry,? said GEO Chief Executive Jonathan Smith, who was also in Portugal, ?Golf is about an outdoor lifestyle, a leisure pursuit very much connected with the environment. It?s also closely connected with communities and culture. So golf, environmental, and social issues are very relevant and closely linked with the quality of the product and the experience you can offer.

?There are challenges, but in terms of things you can control, sustainability is also an exciting opportunity as it is about finding efficiencies, cost savings, wise investment, improved playing experiences, profile and reputation, and business-to-business openings and sponsorships, which go right through your supply chain.?

GEO is an international non-profit organization dedicated entirely to supporting sustainability in and through the sport of golf, working with stakeholders across the golfing, government, environmental, and academic communities. Collaborators include The European Tour, United Nations Environmental Program, and a growing number of national golf organizations such as golf federations throughout Europe and the club managers associations of America, China, and Europe.

IAGTO and GEO will work to integrate sustainability into golf tourism by implementing a program of strategic planning, including guidance and advice to governments, and raising awareness of the GEO Certified ecolabel as a credible way to recognize sustainability in golf management, new development, and renovations.

?What I like about GEO?s approach is that we can take any golf course at any stage [of development] and see how it can be improved,? elaborated Walton, ?We are not out to judge. Instead, I want to see all 725 IAGTO golf course and golf resort members improving on a year-on-year basis.?

A core aim will be to support IAGTO member facilities and resorts by promoting the guidance and programming designed to help them achieve a range of business benefits, and which lead to the GEO Certified ecolabel. ?We now have a mechanism and the guidelines in place to enable them to achieve that.?

As the global trade organization for the golf tourism industry, IAGTO?s membership comprises more than 2,000 members in 88 countries, including 500 golf tour operators in 60 countries.
Established in 1997, it?s estimated that IAGTO?s operators control over 85% of golf holiday packages sold worldwide and turnover of more than 1 billion euro per year.

Over the last decade, IAGTO has worked on the golf tourism promotional and development strategies for more than 25 countries and regions, during which the organization has performed golf tourism audits with more than 200 courses. The aim is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of golf course striving to attract more visitors. ?Our job is to look at a golf course through the eyes of the first-time golf visitor,? explained Walton as he revealed that from 2013, IAGTO will conduct golf tourism audits for individual IAGTO members.

More than 1,200 golf buyers and suppliers took part in IGTM 2012, representing 45 countries. The Algarve is one of only two destinations to have hosted the IGTM more than once in its 15-year history, having hosted the event in 1999. Then, only 400 delegates took part in the fledgling initiative. The subsequent increase in numbers underlines the fact that the international golf travel industry has grown considerably over the past fourteen years. In the same period, the number of Algarve golf courses has risen from 20 to 40, a figure not lost on Walton.

The Algarve got a number of things right as a burgeoning golf destination, he acknowledged. The region had built some great golf courses in the right locations, and subsequently upheld high standards of customer service and course maintenance.

?Right from the early days, [the Algarve] forged very strong alliances with golf tour operators and took pride in delivering the best possible experience for visiting golf travelers,? he said, ?There is no substitute for having a high quality of product and services on the one hand, and great relationships between business ? buyers and suppliers ? on the other.?

The IGTM also provided a platform for the US Department of Commerce to announce the launch of an ambitious golf initiative into Europe.

Robert Stackpole, Senior International Trade Specialist with the US Commercial Service, unveiled the plan during a briefing with delegates representing nine US golf destinations who were attending the event to encourage more Europeans to tee-off in America.

Borne out of President Barack Obama?s 2010 US National Export Initiative and implemented through coordination with the US Department of Commerce Travel & Tourism Team, the strategy is to leverage the department?s network of Export Assistance Centers throughout the United States and offices around the world to identify export ready golf courses, golf associations, and state tourism agency golf representatives to target the European market.

?One of the most important industry sectors, and a specific focus of the national export initiative is travel and tourism,? confirmed Stackpole, ?We realize there?s great potential within the sports travel sector, specifically golf.?

US States, destinations, and resorts have been successfully marketing themselves individually for several years but the initiative represents the first time the US has been marketed as an entire country for playing golf.

According to the United States World Golf Foundation, golf in the US is valued at US$76 billion dollars, and there are over 16,000 golf courses, 11,000 of which are open to the general public. Golf Digest notes that of the top 75 courses in the world, 44 are located in America.

Coastal South Carolina, Doral Golf Resort & Spa (Florida), Fairways Golf Vacations (Alabama), Florida?s First Coast of Golf, NBC ? Golf Channel, Pebble Beach (California), The American Club (Wisconsin), Charleston and Resort Islands Golf (South Carolina), and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday (South Carolina) were all represented at the briefing.

?The international market is very important to us,? commented David Reese, president of Florida?s First Coast of Golf, ?The IGTM is a great show, with great people. The US should have a branded presence here [in Europe] where we can support our tour operators.?

Tim Ryan, Vice President, Sales, of Pebble Beach Resorts, agreed. ?Our business is very much an experience business,? he said, ?We are always looking for the right tour operators to create those experiences. The structure of IGTM facilitates this.?

Ultimately, the initiative will see a more robust American presence at future IGTMs, said Stackpole, ?The idea is to have more stands with more destinations promoting ?Brand USA? and where US and foreign tour operators can meet and do business.?

Without doubt, IGTM 2012 provided a much-needed boost to the local economy. The old adage that when the Algarve sneezes Portugal catches a cold has become more poignant in recent years, with visitor numbers dwindling and hotel occupancy plummeting across the region, particularly during the low season.

The Algarve represents 60% of the country's hotel supply so when there's a slump in the south, the rest of Portugal tends to suffer. ?

Golf, however, is providing just the tonic for Europe's south-westernmost tourist destination. Indeed, this mainstay winter remedy helps generate business and restores confidence in an increasingly beleaguered Portuguese tourism market. ?

?Golf is very important to the Algarve. It reduces seasonality and helps stabilize winter demand,? explained Frederico Costa, President of Turismo de Portugal. ?

The hosting by Turismo de Portugal of high-profile international events such as the IGTM is paramount to the image of a country currently struggling to turn things around. And with domestic tourism still in a downward spiral, Costa is relying on external markets to get the country back on track.

?Two-thirds of tourism business in Portugal is generated by international markets, which are starting to grow. Our 2012 figures are up a bit on last year and we're expecting a better year in 2013, with sustained growth based on the performance of key external markets.???

With its ochre cliffs and honey-colored sands, the Algarve stretches for 200 kilometers from the Spanish frontier in the east to the western shores of the Alentejo region. There's much to lure the modern traveler besides golf, such as the natural spa town of Monchique located high in the mountains and the Ria Formosa wetlands, a popular stopover for many rare species of migratory bird. ?

?People should look beyond the beaches and try to experience something different in the Algarve,? suggested Jorge Beldade, Regional Operations Director for Tivoli Hotels & Resorts and General Manager of the five-star Tivoli Marina Hotel. ?

Tivoli is one of the largest chains in the Algarve with six properties across the region, including another five-star property in Vilamoura, Tivoli Victoria (replete with Elements Spa by Banyan Tree) that overlooks the Arnold Palmer-designed Victoria Golf Course. The group operates a further six units variously located in Lisbon, Sintra and Coimbra, plus two hotels in the Brazilian cities of Salvador da Bahia and Sao Paulo. ?

Despite the recession, golf is a growing segment and provides an essential source of tourism revenue, not only for the Tivoli group but for the Algarve, too.

Indeed, the four key markets of France, Germany, UK & Ireland, and Scandinavia alone accounted for more than 300 million euro of Portugal's golf receipts in the past twelve months, which has provided a positive knock-on effect for Tivoli's Algarve operation. ?

?Our year-round occupancies are up 1 percent on last year and we're forecasting a rise of between 2.5 and 3 percent in revenue next year,? revealed Beldade. ?

Having one of the Algarve's landmark hotel properties in his regional portfolio certainly helps. Besides being fully renovated, the Tivoli Marina Hotel recently unveiled a new entertainment facility sewn into the hotel?s gardens called Puro Beach. The leisure zone (which can be covered in winter) surrounds a swimming pool and proved a popular after-hours venue for delegates. It can cater for sit-down meals for up to 1,800 guests and provided the ideal setting for the IAGTO Awards Gala Dinner.

?The IGTM couldn?t have been held anywhere else in the Algarve,? noted Beldade, citing the hotel?s impressive conference facilities and clearly proud to have staged such a prestigious event that involved the cream of the international golf travel industry.

The 16th edition of IGTM will take place in the Costa Daurada region of Spain in November 2013.
