OFUNATO, Japan -- In a large, bright room not far from the ocean that raged through this coastal Japanese city nearly a year ago, a handful of people with magnifying glasses pore over boxes of photographs of friends or loved ones.
The massive March 11 tsunami that leveled buildings and flattened towns along a wide swathe of northern Japan, including Ofunato, also took a more subtle toll, with hundreds of thousands of photographs lost to the churning waters.
But now these memories are slowly making their way back to their owners, thanks to the painstaking efforts of a team that cleans them of mud, dirt and oil.
"I got one photo blown up, and I was so thankful for that. I put it in a frame, and it brought tears to my eyes," said 77-year-old resident Yoshiko Jindai, looking through boxes of photographs.

Ofunato has enlisted a team of seven part-time staffers to help sort though the over 350,000 photos that have accumulated after being brought in by police, firefighters, rescue workers and average citizens who were looking through the rubble.
In charge of cleaning and restoring the photos is paper conservator Satoko Kinno, who said her job is the second stage in the marathon of returning the photos to their owners after they are found.
In the immediate aftermath of a monstrous earthquake that triggered a tsunami, fires, and nuclear power plant warnings, Dateline NBC reports on the current state of Japan and its people.

"I try to remember that people found these photos in the midst of rubble, and that I have to take the baton from them. So that's where I get my motivation," Kinno said.
The photos are frozen once found to prevent bacteria and mold from growing on them until they can be properly cleaned and packed for display.
The facility holds the photos in its industrial-sized freezer bins until they can be dealt with. Once cleaned, they are packed into photo albums and taken around to temporary housing complexes in the hopes of finding their owners.
Other people choose to sort through boxes of photos themselves for hours on end, looking for snapshots of their lives thought lost to the forces of nature.
Seven months after the earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, debris from the disaster was tracked slowly moving across the Pacific Ocean toward the U.S. NBC News' Kate Snow reports.
Some laugh and chat as they search, as if at a casual social occasion. Others grab the books and flip through quickly, almost desperately.
But even those who don't find anything are grateful for the chance to sort through albums filled with thousands of photos of children, graduations and even scenery of areas struck by the tsunami, now devastated. "I have some photos and videos at my home, but it's still very nice of them to do this," said 79-year-old Kimiko Tanaka.
If somebody finds photos that might belong to another person, a member of Kinno's team will make the rounds of temporary housing to take the memories back to them.

Quarterly revenue increased 12 percent to $5.68 billion from $5.07 billion partly on higher tire prices, but tire unit volumes dropped 5 percent on difficulties in Latin America, flooding in Thailand and declining replacement industry volumes in mature markets.
The revenue performance missed Wall Street's estimate of $5.86 billion.
Goodyear said that revenue per tire rose 19 percent for the quarter, taking out the effects of foreign currency translation.
A focus on high-end tires helped Goodyear increase revenue per tire by 17 percent for 2011.

Its shares fell $1, or 7.2 percent, to $12.97 in morning trading. Its shares are still up 52 percent from their 52-week low of $8.53 in early October. They peaked for the year at $18.83 in early May.
For the year, Goodyear reported net income of $321 million, or $1.26 per share. In the previous year it lost $216 million, or 89 cents per share.

Their mission was daunting: rescue survivors trapped inside a wrecked plane that has sunk in the Bermuda Triangle.
But Trinity Episcopal middle schoolers accepted the challenge with gusto. This was, after all, the culmination of months of training.
In this instance, the ocean floor was a backyard pool in downtown Victoria. The plane, a bucket held down by weights. And the life-saving apparatus was a remotely operated vehicle assembled by teenage hands.
"Whenever I told my friend we were building underwater robots at school, he said, 'Yeah, you're lying,'" said Jonas Bubela, one of the sixth-grade robot engineers.
The adventure was real after all. Trinity Episcopal middle schoolers have joined only seven schools in Texas taking part in the Navy-sponsored program Sea Perch.
The program offers a curriculum developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which guides kids along every aspect of creating the underwater robots.
Students soldered and sawed, programmed and assembled their vehicles, whose three motors were powered by a 12-volt battery. The rest of the contraption was just some PVC pipe, zip ties and other inexpensive materials.
"We learned some construction fundamentals, some naval design and a little bit about teamwork," said Todd Valdes, a parent who works with the Office of Naval Research and sponsored the program at Trinity.
On Friday, the experience came to a head as two teams battled their robots in an underwater rodeo.
The first challenge the two teams faced involved dropping buoyant pool toys inside a bucket in order to raise it to the surface and retrieve its "passengers."
Second up, they had to plug a simulated oil spill by dropping a cap on some PVC pipe. And finally, the students had to retrieve scattered treasure - magnets at the bottom of the pool.
"I've learned that it is a lot safer to use robots instead of people in things like oil spills," said Seth Pe?a, 12. "Teamwork is a big aspect of this, too. If you're just standing there yelling at someone, you can't get anywhere."
That was difficult, understandably, in such a high-intensity rescue situation. While one pilot on each team maneuvered the robot with a hand control, other team members surrounded the pool, belting out commands in the hopes of beating their classmates.
But after losing the first competition, one team adjusted its strategy to take the next win.
"We got rid of a weight, and we actually had people talking to each other," eighth-grader Carson Tharp said.
The two teams will have a few more months to perfect their skills and to tweak their robots before prime-time: the national competition in Virginia in April.
