Proposal description:

Proposal Title:
Sexual Education for Elderly People

Main objectives of the project:
The Andalusian Regional Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has developed a Strategy for Sexuality Development which aims to expand public health concerns with sexuality beyond Sexually Transmitted Infections and unwanted pregnancies and address populations whose sexuality is particularly at risk and/or traditionally overlooked. This Strategy is based on viewing sexuality as a value, an opportunity and ability. It intends to be efficient, focus on gender, equality, diversity, participation, cultural diversity, interdepartmental co-operation and to change the model of sexual health education in Elderly People. After the success of the first phase of Andalusian Plan for Promoting Sexual Health in Elderly People initiative, the group has resolved to continue into a second phase of the project but with an European dimension and also expand it to include elderly people with disabilities and chronic illnesses.

Rationale of the project:
The Promoting Sexual Health in Elderly People Plan was part of the Active Ageing Plan where 400 senior citizens and health workers did a 120 hour course and then gave sexuality workshops to senior citizens; all of which were highly evaluated by the attendees. 90 individuals were giving trainer-training courses to now (in the second phase) teach peer leaders and educators to later give workshops in their communities about sexual health. The objectives of this initiative is to focus on the important issue of sexual health and healthy sexual options, support the participation of elderly people as advocates of sexual health within their cohort and open research lines within this area. A mixed methodology is employed with on?line, virtual and in-person classes and the curriculum includes: the human sexual condition (history, morality and sexual differentiation), sexual behaviour, attitudes towards sexuality, sexual abilities, sexuality and disability, group dynamics, corporeality, emotional intelligence, communication and seduction, and relationships. The goal of the mobility of elderly educator in this project would be to share experiences and knowledge. It has been documented that both elderly people with intellectual and physical disabilities are especially at risk for a disregard of their sexuality. The group means to create and implement plan of actions to attend to the sexual health needs and rights specific to people with physical and intellectual disabilities bearing in mind the recommendations of the WHO?s Promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health for Persons with Disabilities Guidelines and based on an equality and freedom model.

Objektives:
The objectives of the project include: establishing a working relationship with already existent organisations for elderly people with disabilities, furthering awareness about sexual rights, educating health care workers and advocates and implementing protocol for addressing sexuality in patients; counting on the 90 trained professionals and employing and facilitating access to the previously developed on-line education programs. Through dynamic workshops tackling myths regarding sexuality and the disabled, confront attitudes towards sexuality, relationship skills, intellectual disability and seduction skills, corporeality, among others. The educational initiative is not only for elderly people with disabilities but their professional care-takers (when applicable) and family members.?

Expected outputs and results:
With this project the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Health and Social Welfare intends to develop an european Strategy for Sexuality Development which aims to expand public health concerns with sexuality beyond Sexually Transmitted Infections and unwanted pregnancies and address populations whose sexuality is particularly at risk and/or traditionally overlooked.? After the success of the first phase of Andalusian Plan for Promoting Sexual Health in Elderly People initiative, the group has resolved to continue into a second phase of the project but with an European dimension and also expand it to include elderly people with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
