A majority of Canadians distrust insurance companies to act in the best interest of Canada?s health care system and think that those companies will drive up health care costs if given an increased role, according to results of a Nanos Research survey conducted on behalf of the Canadian Health Coalition.
?Most Canadians understand that private health care is costly and inefficient,? said Mike McBane, Executive Director of the Canadian Health Coalition. ?They also know that the drive for profits will usually come before the care and treatment of themselves and their families.?
In a national random telephone survey, 62.6% of Canadians indicated that they distrust or somewhat distrust private insurance companies to make decisions that are in the best interest of Canada?s health care system. Another 59.9% think that health care costs would go up if private insurance companies had a greater role in our health care system.
?We can all see the privatization forces mobilizing and trying to get more access to our health care,? said Mr. McBane. ?This is something that is clearly worrisome to Canadians of all political leanings and in all parts of the country.?
A majority of supporters of all political parties have trust issues with private insurance companies when it comes to acting in the interests of the Canadian health care system, with 51.2% of Conservative supporters, 62.3% of Liberals supporters and 74% of NDP supporters indicating that they distrust or somewhat distrust them. A belief that private insurance companies would drive up health care costs also crosses party lines with 46.3% of Conservative supporters, 63.9% of Liberals and 63.6% of New Democrats reporting that opinion.
Nanos Research conducted a national random telephone survey of 1,000 Canadians aged 18 and over between October 4th and 11th, 2012. The survey is considered accurate ?3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
